Almost everything metal in my room turns. My zinc plated chain turned to a dusty grey look, same with chrome cuffs.

I now got a beautiful stainless steel/leather collar and cuff set and was wondering what to store them in. A wood box? Plastic box? Fabric bag?

I'd prefer not to oil or spray the metal items.

Stainless steel doesn't rust. You should, however, keep the leather part of the collar and cuffs clean and you can apply an agent such as Lexol or something similar for conditioning. I've had a stainless steel ball stretcher for several years and it's required no maintence at all. I do clean the ball stretcher after play with 409. I'd store the collar and cuffs the same way I'd store any leather product. Keep it out of the sun, avoid direct heat, keep it clean, don't store it in a damp place and it should do just fine. All of my leather is just hung up in my bedroom on the walls, cleaned regularly and it's all just fine. Some of the pieces are over 20 years old.

You probably won't be able to find out what grade stainless you have. Some of the lower grades can develop slight corrosion in anaerobic environments, but that shouldn't happen as you're describing it. Do try to keep the metal clear after cleaning the leather and you should be OK. Fabric might be your best bet for stainless storage: wood will gas out. Don't forget the leather gases out too, so your storage, whatever it is, needs to breathe a little to let the tannins get out.

There's not much you can do for the chain besides polishing and eventually replacing it. That grey you see is the zinc oxidising. Chrome does the same thing, just more slowly.

Good luck,

Just a thought but if you stored it in a silver flatwear chest it'll slow down the oxidization as the fabric liners used in them is treated so that silverwear doesn't tarnish as quickly.

This made me think of the late night infomercials...I suck sacked my silverware and it's ready to go without polishing

You might consider a better quaility chain that is not galvanized or znic. You might try some sicone spray or a gun cleaning cloth to help slow down the oxidation. The climate in the room should be a stable temprature and not damp.

The leather and stainless should not be a problem if its clean and dry.
