It's not rocket science to know when someone is an addict to sex. lol  I don't need a scientist or medical professional to prove it to me... I see it on a daily basis and I am a believer! lol

Release of hormones.
Want the good of hormones.
The high of drugs.  Point 1

The chase - possible win - variable positive reinforcement
Like the high of gambling.  Point 2

Feelings of acceptance, belonging.
Like the high of sports, camraderie of smoking.  Point 3

Relaxation post orgasm.
Like the calm from downers.  Point 4

Willingness to lose all that is important to you for the next hit.
Like alcoholism.  Point 5

Yeah it's addictive.

*this is all right off the top of my head.  Nothing scientific about it.  But it is an educated guess.

Here is the quickly available Wikipedia definition -

"Sexologists have not reached any consensus regarding whether sexual addiction exists or, if it does, how to describe the phenomenon.[1][2] Some experts believe that sexual addiction is literally an addiction, directly analogous to alcohol and drug addictions. Other experts believe that sexual addiction is actually a form of obsessive compulsive disorder and refer to it as sexual compulsivity.[3] Still other experts believe that sex addiction is itself a myth, a by-product of cultural and other influences.[4][5]"

I think much of the time, it's a cutesy "OooOoo, I'm just so wild!!" excuse used by people.... kind of like barsexuals- the women that only want to play with another woman when there's a guy to impress.

FullCircle -> RE: Does Sex Addiction have any basis in Science? (3/28/2009 2:37:18 PM)

Thoz barsexuals are very devious indeed but at the same time oh so impressive.[8|]

pretty much anything can be an addiction, from sex to jogging to world of warcraft. anything that is hurting you and relationships you care about and you get a ecape from life from. drugs are physicaly addiction on their own, but anything can be pychologicaly addictive... EVEN THE INTERNET!

Sounds like a pretty strong indication that it has no scientific basis.

Good morning to one and all [evening to those far flung darlings]. Thank you for your thoughts and for the links [was aware of the Internet opinions and definitions x Vendaval; I am inclined to agree with you Lynnxz]. Hope this did not bother too many as I see more hits than comments. Have a wonderful day/night all.

Because sex is a requirement for the creation of life, I believe that it can be called an "addiction" in the same sense that "drinking water" or "breathing" or "eating" can be called addictive.

That is to say NON-sense.

Anything that stimulates the pleasure sensors of the brain can trigger addictions: food, sex, alcohol, drugs, etc.
