Termyn8or -> On PC vacation (3/28/2009 2:08:44 PM)

For a short spell I won't be on much because my PC took it's final shit the other day. Originally I wasn't going to bother saying anything but I just tried to order a new one on a Saturday and found it difficult. My needs are specific, but not hard to meet. Mainly I want an IDE interface HD so I can slave my old drive to it. I don't care that it is not as fast, I got 70 gigs of stuff there. If I am stuck with SATA I will have to get a big enough drive to copy everything, but then I do not know if my HD is any good.

See Wednesday night it was early but I was tired and fell asleep almost in the chair because I was bone tired. Almost falling out the chair I inadvertently kicked the PC, and it is haunted, so it went through it's knipshits. This is not the first time, and fixing it up until now entailed taking the battery out, then through a bunch of reboots when it says "access violation : keyboard locked, all this crap, it would finally unlock the keyboard, at which time I would go into setup and load defaults. After that it would boot and work for quite some time. Fucker was lulling me into a false sens of security I guess. Well this time when I got done with all this garbage I had to do, it comes up with "NO OS FOUND".

Since the case was open, I may have kicked it in the HD, so I was relieved when it ran Thursday, but then it decided to reboot itself but couldn't. If that HD is bad I lost ALOT. My most recent downloads, some of which were very hard to come by.

So I really don't need all that great a system, and all I need is the box. Money is a bit tight, I mean there is money, but right now things are the way they are and I would like to spend as little as possible. If I could get a bit older board without SATA I could still have the new drive with the OS, the old drive with all the goodies, and the CD burner as well as my region undefined DVD drive.

I'll accept any advice should you care to offer, just bear in mind it may be a few days before I read it. Right now I am at the olman's using his PC, and I don't like doing that and I don't like anyone using mine.

If I am truly stuck buying something that is slightly outside of what I want, oh well, like SATA. I simply do not need it. Also I will not just go to the store. There are so many nags on this thing to regixter or upgrade McAfee's and all that garbage that I just don't need I have been considering just the olman should give up MCE edition and I'll throw Pro Corp on here and fix it once and for all.  Friggin restore disk, restores everything it took weeks to get rid of. If I need antivirus I'll get AVG. I'll get whatever Java I need straight from Sun. I'll get my P2P software (again) from olderversion. All I am concerned with is device drivers. That and a good soundcard and I'll be fine.

They just don't understand that I don't need the best money can buy right now, state of the art.

And why does Global put in their catalog "24/7" but then you can't even get through on a Saturday afternoon ? This because they are closed !

So behave folks, try to rabblerouse on your own. It is possible I might not be back until next Saturday. (I heard that sigh of relief)

Last time I tried changing the firmware to get a regionless DVD I ended up with a truly regionless DVD if you know what I mean.[:D]

Have fun but try to not get arrested.

Termy try http://www.freecycle.org/
This is ideal for your needs. People upgrade, need the space so place their old stuff up for collection. Join the group nearest you and there will certainly be something appropriate within a day or two, for nothing. Their credo is about keeping obsolete goods out of landfill. You will be doing the donors and the planet a favour.
Hurry back dude, you make me feel brainer.

Oh.  You meant the computer.  I saw the thread title and thought you meant you going to stop being politically correct in your posts.  That would have been fun to watch.

Vendaval -> RE: On PC vacation (3/28/2009 3:43:25 PM)

Damn it Heretic!  Good thing I didn't have the ice water in my mouth.  ROFLMAO!!!  [sm=biggrin.gif]

Edited to add -

Axeman, do you really think Term needs ways to get more junk to stick in his living room and garage for his friends to knock over so they can have a fist-fight?  I'm just saying....

UBsincere -> RE: On PC vacation (3/28/2009 3:43:37 PM)

If you feel confortable doing so, have you tried opening the computer case and checking ALL the cables and connections to make sure one hasn't been loosened?

Same type of thing happened to me, but it ended up a loose connection, that would work off and on.

12.65% of house fires are caused by DIY PC repair....probably.

Not to mention the smashed fingers and hand cutting and creative profanity.  [sm=pc.gif]

I took my PC apart once and when I put it back togther it started making funny humming noises so I never fully trusted it again.[8|]

Vendaval -> RE: On PC vacation (3/28/2009 3:52:27 PM)

I leave the taking apart stuff to persons with better skills, otherwise the microwave and stereo might switch functions on me.

Crush -> RE: On PC vacation (3/28/2009 3:55:46 PM)

Get an external usb drive enclosure for your old IDE drive....then you can suck down those contents at your leisure

When I was younger I took practically every electrical device apart and fiddled about with them. Obviously to understand how something works you have to take it apart whilst it is still plugged into the wall, them lightening labels never scared me for I'm a warrior of truth and we don't fear the answers that await us. With our mighty screw driver we prod and poke away probing for the inner workings of the invention of man. Sadly all I ever found were these coloured bead things with metal legs entrenched in shiny green/sometimes beige slices of plastic. With solid state devices even less wonder to discover sadly.[8|]

Sounds like you were an engineer in training.  Did you ever blow anything up by accident in the garage or kitchen?

FullCircle -> RE: On PC vacation (3/28/2009 4:19:53 PM)

No, closest I come was when we that did that electrolysis experiment at school where you copper plate a nail. I forgot to add the beaker of solution into the circuit which lead to no power for anyone. On the positive side of things it looked cool to my friends the way "sparks flew out from my hands".

Vendaval -> RE: On PC vacation (3/28/2009 4:21:46 PM)

Fun times!

FullCircle -> RE: On PC vacation (3/28/2009 4:37:52 PM)

Practice experiments were for me the best part of science classes, you always remember what you did.

Hypothesis: I expect the nail to grow a skin of copper
Method: I'm going to pass a current through this solution to cause this ionic reaction thingy similar to the less desirable rust.
Conclusions: Yep it works, great I have the words most expensive nail.

What is interesting is the understanding later of the practical applications such as measuring the rate of corrosion in a reinforcement bar buried in concrete via the corrosion current produced and relationship to faradays law. We don't see the applications until later sometimes and the importance of that experiment in our understanding years ago.

Wow.  Hmm.   Ebay might work.   Or watch for a sale.  tigerdirect refurbished is ok.   you can save a few bucks there.

I keep meaning to back up some PDFs too,  ouch.

If it makes you feel better I might have blown the transformer on my doorbell.      (  !!! )

"If it makes you feel better I might have blown the transformer on my doorbell"

Just tell the guy to fix it and leave your personal life out of it LOL.

Hmm, what did I do, this thing is not acting as strangely as it was before.
