This is something that might be of interest to Southern California residents, and those who care about them. http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/ Down to the bottom right of the link page, an earthquake swarm is in progress at the southern end of the San Andreas fault. Well over 300 quakes so far, with a 4.8 as the largest. That section of the fault hasn't let go in 300 years, and is what is expected to produce "The Big One" for LA. More details can be found by Googling 'Bombay Bay earthquake,' but I would advise against the CalFire site. It has crashed Inteernet Explorer on two different computers when I tried it.

Don't forget TP and wipes....most people forget that what goes in must come out...and it has to be stored somewhere....

You do know that the border runs mostly east-west, and the fault runs generally north-south, right? Though a good quake might collapse some of the smuggling tunnels.

The existing faults generally run north-south. I referred to the opening of a new fault. However, my sarcasm got the best of me. A real response to the OP is that there have been clusters before and there will be clusters again before "the big one". Seismologists debate whether a cluster is indicative of any change in near term probabilities at all.

They are far more willing to admit they don't have it all figured out [:D] Actually, based on the current swarm event, SoCal seismologists have stated there is as much as a 5% chance of a 7.0 or greater along the southern San Andreas in the next few days as a result of this swarm event. For people who mostly refuse to predict anything, that's worth taking note of.

Wow - 5%! That's... that's a substantial risk. Just short of alarming! I'm like you, Rich. I'd be double checking my emergency kit if I lived down there. Meanwhile, in other geological news, I see that the other quake swarm has completely died out.
