Impstoy -> Looking for some general info... (3/29/2009 11:21:09 AM)

So, I was recently directed to a toy site by a good friend of mine and have found myself drooling over this particular site's plethora of floggers.  Due to the fact that I am not the most experienced with them I thought I'd come here and as a few questions before I invested a whole truckload of money into toys that might prove worthless to me in most ways.

So my questions basically have to do with that.  I'm currently looking at some pretty high intensity ones and wondering how doable they really are.  I'm interested in chain (those little ball chain thingies like used on key chains), rubber, barbed wire rubber, and buffalo and bull.  (Did I mention I was a bit obsessed by these yet?)  Along with those I'm also interested in elk, deer, and moose but am wondering what is really the difference between all these hides and if it's really worth it to invest in all of them or is one pretty much the same as the other.  Also I'm interested in horsehair but heard that it causes all kinds of like micro-cuts when used and am curious about that as well.

So, figuring that here I'm sure to find at least one other person that's obsessed with floggers, I'm throwing myself at your mercy and begging for advice.  Like I said, I don't want to invest a ton of money and come up with a bunch of toys I don't really need when I could be saving for that St Andrew's cross instead.  :D

Thanks in advance...

Edited to add...

I thought it might be helpful to know that these are to be used on me, not for me to be using... although I'm not 100% sure why.  I guess because I'm more looking for the what kind of sensations they provide than the how it feels to wield one.

Are you looking for something thats going to leave a gash or just a really good red mark?

Do you want to bleed when struck or just wince in pain or just have a small amount of pain?

Also are you willing to reveal this site?

Different hides definitely have different sensations.  I have a cow suede flogger that is light and stingy with just a little bit of thud.  I have another with elk falls that is medium thud.  My rubber flogger (high intensity) is EVIL.  The falls are about half as thick as my little finger so it packs a heck of a thud and, since the falls are angle cut, it also delivers a lot of sting.  It can leave bruises through denim jeans with very little effort on my end.  On bare skin, it can draw blood although I've been careful not to do so.  I haven't tried the chain floggers yet, but I know a pain slut who loves them.

Ok, if you're not experienced, My first suggestion to you would be get the thoughts of things like wire and chain out of your head.  You've got a real potential there of hurting someone or being hurt in a not-so-happy kind of way.  It's kind of pointless to buy something that you don't even know if you have the pain tolerance for.

Nobody is going to be able to tell you what a certain implement's sensation is going to feel to you, but you.  So, instead of blowing your money on something that may not be suited for you, I have another suggestion.

Find yourself an experienced top who has a fairly well stocked toy bag and ask that person if they would be willing to allow you to feel various things.  If there is a certain type of flogger that is used that you particularly like, ask the top to give you the information on what type of material it is.  (Before I forget, the different types of hides you mentioned have various levels of sting or thud, depending.)

Impstoy -> RE: Looking for some general info... (3/29/2009 12:23:05 PM)

Okay so apparently need to supply some more information...

First - no blood, I'm so not interested in bleeding or scars.

Also I'm not completely inexperienced.  Master and I have a swede and boondoggle flogger, both of which I love.  My pain tolerance is fairly high and I like to be hurt - although like I said, not turned into a bloody mess.

And while I like the idea of trying things out, I've heard different things about hides retaining body fluids and such and a bit nervous about having something used on me that's been used on other people.  Plus I can't really see my master allowing me to just go find someone and doing that.

As for sharing the site, I'm more than willing to do that - just wasn't sure if it was allowed or not.

LadyPact -> RE: Looking for some general info... (3/29/2009 12:32:11 PM)

In that case, here's another idea....... Cheat.

Not the way you're thinking.  This is something that I do when I'm looking to purchase something new.

If your Master would accept the suggestion, ask if it would be possible to attend an event that has a vendor's fair.  I see you are in CA, so there are some potential ideas for large events that wouldn't be too far from you.  Many vendors will allow you to try something before you buy it.  You don't have to purchase the item there.  You can go back to the site for a better deal later.

Oh!  That's a wonderful idea...

Thank you!

LadyPact -> RE: Looking for some general info... (3/29/2009 4:33:04 PM)

No problem at all.  Happy to be of help.

LovingMistress45 -> RE: Looking for some general info... (3/29/2009 8:25:21 PM)

I have a wonderful deerskin flogger, it is very soft.  I have used chain but not to really beat someone with, I like to freeze them for sensation type play.

As far as body fluids....really if skin isn't being broken, there is not a real need for worry.  However, I 2nd LP's suggestion of vendors at events.  I have purchased several of my toys there and I have found they are more than willing to let you test them.

WyldHrt -> RE: Looking for some general info... (3/29/2009 8:58:37 PM)

If you or your Dom are crafty at all, plain leather floggers are pretty easy to make and cost MUCH less than anything you will find online (I made a matched set of 8 dual color/ leather floggers for less than the price of most  single floggers I see online). This is a fairly inexpensive way to test out different types of leather and find out what you like...not to mention expand your toybag, lol. Once you know what leathers/weights you prefer, you can be fairly sure that you will like the fancy flogger that you decide to spend bocoup $$ on. As for chain and such, these can also be made on the cheap with directions found online (I can give you some sites if you like).

If DIY isn't for you, no worries. As a general guide for leather floggers, the thicker and wider the falls, the more thud a flogger will have. Thinner leather and/ or falls will give more sting. Soft leathers like deer are gentler on the skin than things like cowhide, IME. I've made many floggers from various leathers (and other things), and you can definitely feel the difference depending on the softness, weight. and cut of the leather.
LadyPact's suggestion of trying them out at events is, of course, an excellent one.

LadyPact -> RE: Looking for some general info... (3/29/2009 10:37:35 PM)

Thanks, WyldHrt.

One thing I forgot to mention earlier.  Some vendors actually love this.  It can help them sell their products if an experienced top comes along and starts playing around with things, especially if they have a bottom in their company to use them on.  People will stop to watch, and that's half the battle of getting the customers interested in what they are selling right there.  A toy in action (and hopefully a yummy reaction from a bottom) stirs up a lot more appeal than one that's hanging on a wall.

I didn't read the entire thread, this might be mentioned before but you could go to your local sex xhop and look in the bdsm section and try some out on your own thighs or hand palm, also great for comparing prices
