ORIGINAL: JovialSadist Talking to someone the other day about the Faires, they told me if I show up they are going to put a coin in my mead. They went on to say that the act was ment to "draft" me into battle. I figured out that if that is true, I need to keep my mead covered at all times... Is there any other little bits I should keep my eye open for? That was a technique employed by the Press gangs in England to find people to sail the warships. The idea was a coin, the king's shilling was dropped into a tankard, and when someone downed their ale, they swallowed the coin, the result being the person had taken the king's shilling, so was now in the navy. Other methods of obtaining warship crew, was rounding up sleeping drunks and plain old cudgel over the head. I was told tankards started coming out with glass bottoms, the idea being if there is a coin in the bottom of the tankard, it will be seen, and the drinker can quietly put down the drink and leave and thus avoid the press. If you experience something similar at events, get a tankard with a glass bottom, or a tankard with a hinged lid on it and only lift the lid to drink.
