I don't know what to say other than what the Hell is going on in our society today?  A shooter killed 7 patients and 1 nurse at a nursing home in North Carolina earlier this morning.    [sm=frown.gif]

"7 residents, 1 nurse die in nursing home shooting"

By TOM FOREMAN Jr. and KEVIN MAURER, Associated Press Writers Tom Foreman Jr. And Kevin Maurer, Associated Press Writers – 16 mins ago
CARTHAGE, N.C. – A lone gunman burst into a North Carolina nursing home Sunday morning and started "shooting everything," barging into the rooms of terrified patients, sparing some from his rampage without explanation while killing seven residents and a nurse caring for them.

Authorities said Robert Stewart also wounded three others, including the Carthage police officer who confronted him in a hallway of Pinelake Health and Rehab and stopped the brutal attack. Officials said the massacre could have been bloodier if the officer had not managed to subdue Stewart.

"He acted in nothing short of a heroic way today, and but for his actions, we certainly could have had a worse tragedy," said Moore

County District Attorney Maureen Krueger. "We had an officer, a well-trained officer, who performed his job the way he was supposed to and prevented this from getting even worse than it is now."

By late Sunday afternoon, Krueger had charged Stewart, 45, of Moore County, with eight counts of first-degree murder and a single charge of felony assault of a law enforcement officer. Authorities offered few other details, allowing only that Stewart was not a patient or an employee at the nursing home and isn't believed to be related to any of the victims.

Authorities said they would release more information at a news conference Monday morning.

I admit it: I'm getting immune to this sort of thing. It's pretty horrible [:(] .

Just keep repeating guns don't kill people, people kill people.  [8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|][8|]

That doesn't make me feel any better at all, rule.  [&:]

Perhaps we're not auto-suggestive enough.

That wasn't meant literally.

That was a poke at the NRA disciples who I'm sure you are going to be hearing from shortly.

kittinSol -> RE: "7 residents, 1 nurse die in nursing home shooting" (3/29/2009 7:40:03 PM)

They'll come any minute now...

TheHeretic -> RE: "7 residents, 1 nurse die in nursing home shooting" (3/29/2009 7:48:29 PM)

Seems he was using a standard sporting rifle and/or shotgun, RML.  Those are untouchable anyway.  And I don't think even the whackiest NRA life-member thinks we should arm Alzheimer's patients for self-defense.

What a horrible thing.  Anyone besides me say the death penalty is completely appropriate?

kittinSol -> RE: "7 residents, 1 nurse die in nursing home shooting" (3/29/2009 7:53:17 PM)

Are you trying to deflect from the real issue with your allusions to the death penalty (NOT the solution, of course, since the damage has already been done), which is that guns are so readily available there's a new massacre nearly every week?

TheHeretic -> RE: "7 residents, 1 nurse die in nursing home shooting" (3/29/2009 8:14:32 PM)

The "real issue," Kitten?  I'd say that is the violence and insanity that ever dwells in the hearts and minds of our species.  I'm not the one who tried to promptly use this tragedy to push a political agenda.  If anything, I offered an alternative to what you were already snarking at.

kittinSol -> RE: "7 residents, 1 nurse die in nursing home shooting" (3/29/2009 8:22:03 PM)

That's beyond disingenuous. I will reverse your argument, and tell you that human nature is nothing but a convenient non-truth for pushing your political agenda. Because human nature is everywhere, but it seems to be more prevalent here, in America... it's very, very strange, really.

TheHeretic -> RE: "7 residents, 1 nurse die in nursing home shooting" (3/29/2009 8:29:39 PM)

Funny thing, Kitten.  I went downstairs for a cold beverage before I replied to RML's attempt to make this all about those baa-aaad, baa-aaad, guns.  The Discovery Channel was showing a bit of documentary footage of a band of chimpanzees attacking a nearby band.  They cannabilized one of the ones they killed.  Maybe it isn't just our species...

Maybe, but I hope some of us have progressed beyond the chimpanzee stage.

You know, that whole evolution thing I keep hearing so much about.

You baited, someone nibbled, and now the feeding frenzy will start. Yep it sure looks evolutionary to me.

Rule, you are getting and have started just what you wanted, and kitten is enjoying it as well. Some people lost their lives, and you are baiting and shit for grins and giggles. That tells me a lot about our society.

Heretic, you should have never went for the bait man. The outcome was so predicatable.

It's that this kind of tragedy is feasted upon as a sign that society is perfect that's disgusting, Orion.

No, I wasn't baiting and I really didn't want it.

Just predicting it.

Just like I am predicting we are going to have 20 pages to follow debating the second amendment.

Have fun.  Most of those suck, but whatever creams your Twinkie, y'know?

Orion, I appreciate your concern, but it wasn't the bait so much as the opportunity to tangle the line.

Ok, one crack at dragging it back towards the OP.  The nursing home had 20 of their 110 beds (iirc) dedicated for Alzheimer's patients.  I wonder how many of the families will secretly be grateful to the killer?

girlygurl -> RE: "7 residents, 1 nurse die in nursing home shooting" (3/29/2009 9:16:46 PM)

I think it's very sad. I don't understand the human race... Nope, I just don't.

What a lovely thought.
