Ok, so I've stuck my foot deeply into my mouth....

I've convinced Sir that the way to go is hardwood and tile throughout the house. But now I've got to thinking...
It is ME who is going to have to be kneeling and sitting on all that hardwood and tile! Do I invest in a good set of knee pads, throw pillows, resign myself to perpetual agony??? Not to mention that when we host parties my pain will be shared by many others.

One of those situations where I spoke before I fully engaged my brain. So what do all of you tile and hardwood lovers do?

Floor pillows and area rugs. Tile and hardwood are easier to keep clean, less likely to be stained by 4 legged pets. But area rugs go on top, and floor pillows will soften them even further.

One friend who hosted a lot of parties in a house with hardwood floors had a collection of large pillows, about 2' square, for the subbies to use. They were actually very comfy for sitting.

I don't know what she did for crawling around, though... Have you considered silicone implants in your knees?

Well, if he agrees with you, I would go with lots of floor cushions and pillows. Not only are they actually comfortable, they add a nice homey touch also.

I do like the floor pillow idea. Now I just have to figure out how to make the dogs understand that I'm not providing them with unlimited new beds.

I have purchased a couple of floor cushions that are kept strategically around the house. You can find them in the lawn and garden section at many Wal Marts, Home Depots, etc.

If you want something that would look classy and do the job of saving your knees, have a look at kneeling pads, pew cushions and hassocks that are made and sold all over the web. Some of them would look really good against a good wood floor.

Sir doesn't have tile or hardwood floors but he does have the most god damn awful short pile rough carpet. It is horrid to kneel on and even worse to crawl on. I still have carpet burns on my feet from about three weeks ago.
What do i do? I grin and bear it.

Personally, mist...I like the hardwood and tiled floor idea, with cushions...and a nice plate of R.M.O. as an appetizer for everyone, especially you.

Hmmmm.....I wonder how they'd go with rice? Being the good hostess that I am and all.....Persephonee can have my share.

From a biological perspective, I would take the knees into account. They're terribly delicate for crawling. Especially if expected to crawl as quickly as a dog can walk. Knee pads may have been suggested comically, but it's not a terrible idea. Foam carpentry pads really do wonders.... I was on my knees packing boxes away for about 4 hours last week and with knee pads, it felt great.

If possible, I insist on the right tool for the job. If I was asked to crawl all day, knee pads would not be an unreasonable request. Wishing the human knee was a foot does not make it so.

There are also foam floor pads which give a great foot feel. Larger booths in car and home shows use them because people enjoy resting their feet on the softer rubbery material. It's firm enough to not have those lucky shoe-clad bastards feel like they're walking on pillows, and soft enough for the puppies feetsies. Plus... You can still toss the rice onto it =)

Just be thankfull that the floor is not compacted earth, compacted sand or raw cement.......Not being cruel or uncaring here but when you brood about the hardships of kneeling on wooden flaws, remember there are worse things in life. My floors will ever be of hard wood or paving stones as long as I have malamutes in the house. No way am I going through the dehairing of carpets again..

Half of the main floor in our house is ceramic tile.  It is NOT easy to maintain by any stretch!  Grout is a new circle of hell!  Go Pergo or something similar.

Still, I think you made the right choice considering you have about 400 pounds of Labrador (and attendant HAIR) to deal with.   The other ladies are right, area rugs and pillows rule!  Or a folded up afghan.

Oh, and the tile?  Leaches up cold like raw cement.  I love it in the summer, but OH is it cold to sit on!

There are beautiful kneeling/meditation cushions all over the web :-)

What I personally love about these is that they create a miniature "sacred space" and when used for the purpose of kneeling in submission they enhance the mindset and beauty of the action. Ofcourse, I am very much into simplistic, minimalistic, eastern influenced elegance~
