No, this is NOT an April Fools joke arriving early. This worm which may already be lurking on your machine is very real. On April 1st the Conficker worm will simply start taking more steps to protect itself. After that date, machines infected with the “C” variant of the worm may not be able to get security updates or patches from Microsoft and from many other vendors. The creators of the worm will also start using a communications system that is more difficult for security researchers to interrupt.

Update your Anti-virus Scanners.
More information at:

One removal method...there are others..all of the Anti-virus sites are prepared.

You might as well, Popeye. I just got an e-mail last night telling me the whole internet is going to be closed that day for maintenance anyway. Apparently, they shut the entire internet down once a year, on April 1st, to clean out old websites and flush out the pipelines. I never knew that before, but it makes perfect sense when you think about it.

The pundits seem comfortable recommending we check the automatic updates settings.

To get there: Settings/Control Panel/Security Center and make sure the Automatic Updates indicates that its on. Apparently this worm will turn off the update feature.

The sites I listed, tell you how to check for it, how to remove it, and remind you to update your protection. This is not a CIH virus which could destroy your BIOS and did a lot of damage on April 22, 1999 but it is one of sufficient concern since it can open your machine up as a zombi, infect other machines and update itself from certain servers to mine information from your system, etc. According to the Pundits..which are in the link above.

Who shuts down the internet and does the maintenance? I have never heard of this before. You mean there is a group who is responsible for maintaining the internet? How exactly does that work?

I don't remember all the details, but it's all in the e-mail. I have it saved on my other computer. I'll copy and paste it here when I log on to the desktop, because it's probably something people really ought to know about.

I'd say that's a pretty solid limb you're going out on.

Thanks for the warning, poen kitten.  There is more about Conflicker here on Slate -

"The Worm That Ate the Web"

The latest version of Conficker isn't the first bot to plague the Internet, but it may be the smartest and most sophisticated. And it starts phoning home Wednesday.

By Farhad Manjoo
Posted Monday, March 30, 2009, at 5:20 PM ET

"Much of the media coverage surrounding Conficker has centered on its go-live date, April Fool's Day. But that's something of a red herring; it's unlikely that anything will blow up on the first. The date is significant only to the latest version of Conficker, which is set to go to the Web and check a huge list of sites for files put out by the worm's creators that will instruct the botnet what to do next. But previous versions of Conficker, which are much more common than the latest variant, have been looking for those files for months now. April Fool's Day will only become Conficker Day if its creators chose that day to upload the worm's new instructions.

It's the update files that will determine Conficker's next course of action. At the moment, that's a complete mystery. Even if Conficker amounts to nothing, though, its rise suggests a key vulnerability in the infrastructure of the Internet. By harnessing millions of computers that can be turned to any possible caper, a band of hackers has created a truly dastardly weapon. The big question now is what they'll do with it.

Conficker is far from the Internet's first serious malware attack. But it is perhaps the most well-thought-out and technically cunning ever to hit it big. The word worm conjures up something ugly, inelegant, even dumb. Conficker is anything but—it's the Bugatti of worms, every element exquisitely crafted to advance a single goal: in this case, total control of your machine. To read the security reports documenting Conficker's technical details is to be at once astonished and impressed by its professor Moriarty-type planning. The C variant, for instance, includes a subroutine that claws back at any efforts to remove it. It disables Windows services that patch your machine, prevents your computer from loading up into "safe mode" (a key way to fight nasty malware), and continually scans for and shuts down any security programs that might pose a threat—including the most commonly used Conficker-removal programs. (I'm still confident my machine's free of Conficker because my anti-virus program was able to complete its search; if you notice your program shut down almost immediately after it starts, you may have a problem.)"

It isnt due to hit April first, only to update itself. This from your symantec link.

"If you’re worried about the Conficker worm striking on April 1st, don’t be."

April 1st here and all is well.

How do you know if you have it?

*scratches head*

I've done scans and it says that everything is ok?

For those (like myself) who have Automatic Updates off, another way is to see if automatic updates are even possible. If they are, you should be fine, but if not you're likely infected by the worm.

Oh my god, can we do anything or have something without screwing it up? When I say we I mean us, people, human beings, earthlings. We have an awsome tool like the internet and what do we do with it...screw it up! Maybe "they" should shut down the internet completely, the whole thing, forever. It's obvious we can't handle it. We've screwed up the economy, the enviroment, education, healthcare/social security, the internet...please if I'm leaving something out let me know.

If someone pulls this off, they work for microsoft. It has to be an April fools thing.  I have updated everything I possibly can.

Best Wishes.
