Bengay is usually in an oily ointment base, so it doesn't wash off well with water.
Most formulas use methyl salicylate and menthol, and a couple of their products add camphor these days.
- Methyl salicylate is oil of wintergreen. Its role in Bengay is to cause dilation of the capillaries and an increase in blood circulation. A teaspoon of the stuff, taken internally (and yes, up your bunghole is internally) is like swallowing 20-some odd aspirin, which is dangerous and can be fatal. CNN reported in 2007 how a 17-year old died from even external use of a lot of methyl salicylate.
- Menthol is made from mint oils, such as peppermint oil, and acts as a local anaesthetic and provides the sensation of cold in products like Bengay.
- Camphor is readily absorbed through the skin and produces a feeling of cooling similar to that of menthol and acts as slight local anesthetic and antimicrobial substance.
If you want some burn up the bunghole, have you considered figging? The effects are short-term and can be halted with soap and water.
