After doing some research on the subject of gas mask fetishes, I found that there is very little information/ theories on how this develops in a person. I have a keen interest in psychology (and gas masks, surpirse!) and have learned some of the theories of various fetishes like foot worship, laytex, furries ect. and am wondering if any of you have heard of any thoeries or have your own. Let me see what you think, or hear stories on the topic.

My Master kinda gave up on these forums some time ago.  I don't really like speaking for Him so let me express only what I have experienced.

1. With the respirator, He controls the very air I breathe.  He can change the filters or add more filters make breathing more difficult for me.  It forces me to concentrait on each breath.  It is the only sound I hear.

2. Wearing both hood and respirator, I no longer have a recognisable face.  I am now simply a creature with no other purpose than to accept whatever is His whim, however evil, however painful, however twisted.

3.  It is a form of device bondage.  Bondage is a huge fetish for both of us.

The gas mask may not qualify as a real fetish as it is not necessary for His arousal or orgasm.  He uses it as it strikes His fancy.  I had not had experience with these prior to meeting Him and I've grown to look forward to it.

The idea of focusing  your attention onto every breath you take  can be intense for some. You see this  expressed in horror movies who use it to build intensity of the villian wearing one as he or she chases down the victim.  Eyesopen is very correct about how it may seem your just "meat" or an un person if you have no physical connection with  someone, especially  when you consider in most cases your vision is distorted, facial expressions or hidden and depending on the level of constume or play clothing , your entire person is now encased with nothing to exhibit who you are except for height ,size and muffled speak. And certainly some will place scents or liquids into the mask to create more stress or suffering for you  without any discomfort to them doing it .

The disadvantages are certainly people with breathing or problems with  feeling  seperated with the world. Some people you may  turned off by the fact they can 't read your eyes  or feel an involvement with you.  Good luck

I'm going with the sensory deprivation theory.
Had a gasmask in the house for several years (Ex- was a Marine) and, after discovering some people find them sexually interesting, I put the thing on.  It smelled funny: that's my most pervasive recollection.  Now, had I been having some interesting stuff going on while wearing the thing, might that have been different?  Perhaps but I'd prefer less funky smellilng, unattractive formsof masking/hooding, I think.  Then again, with the right person, in the right moment, I'm sure it'd be cool.  :>  I'm about the people more than theprops: and, while I love props, if they're more important, that's a bad sign.

Most of the old gas mask designs I've seen , remind me of  Jeff Goldblume's character in "The Fly" .   I find them to be immensely erotic , and somewhat menacing .

I believe a huge driving force for fetishes is scarcity. Similarly, rarity. Often things that are rare are scary, because they are poorly understood or we are not comfortable around them yet. Gas masks in particular are rare in our society, and evoke feelings of concern, particularly those cognizant in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. They are metaphorically and literally part of a uniform designed to alienate the outside world (or the person in the haz mat suit, whichever). They are, in my opinion, the poster child for post-apocalyptica.

Idolizing (fetishizing) this imagery in a safe environment grasps our interest. Lately, the issue of safety vs. risk has been on my mind. The gas mask has a good bit of that aspect as well. It's presences insists risk is near, but safety within...

Omfg, I so totally and completely agree with you: compared to clowns (Which are insanely creepy, imo) a gas mask is downright sexy.
And, heavanskeeper, awesome conceptualization of the gas mask appeal.  :>

Well, my thought is that it can be based on multiple different kinks or just plain the unusualness of the item.

A gas mask isn't something most see or get to touch or wear, regularly...it's oneof those things only on tv for some.  Then you've all the kink it can involve, as said:  latex, breath play, military/uniforms, danger, roleplaying, masks in general, identity hiding (separate of masks themselves), enclosed spaces, limited vision, limited speech, limited eating and drinking, head bondage, discomfort... and so on.

I've worn and slept with one on during my Army time and own 2 now (one newer version I just got as part of a huge kinky easter basket from my spouse!).  I enjoy playing with them for various reasons mentioned.

Somewhere, someone has fetishized Breath-Rite nose strips, I'm sure.

i went to a demo on hoods a couple of years ago and the most enticing part for me were the gas masks. i can't fully express the erotic thrill i get, save the fact that i'm very turned on by breath play in general. i believe the sensory deprivation and detachment from ones environment just heightens it all.

in regard to your research, you may find better luck if you expand the category a wee bit more, since it does fall under a pretty wide umbrella fetish wise. good luck!

Give this a try...put one on...make sure its tight... then run 10 miles in Cuban heat... Do it every time a sadistic CO feels like making your life hell.. That will cure your fetish I'll bet... I have trouble breathing every time I see one.

we play with a gas mask, no filter tho, but I love masks n hoods, the thick rubber, the eye goggles, alll have that delicious sensory dep , the breath control is part of it, but not like the bondagee fulfillment........blurry plays better sometimes than sightless add the smell, I do like the space it puts him in
Oh and its hot looking toooo
KD that would be a hard limit(10 miles, let alone cuban heat)

Anyone who hangs around with people who eat copious quantities of boiled cabbage, peanuts, beans and drinks beer will develop a love for good gas masks....

I have one. They are not rare. You can purchase a basic gas mask like the one I own (Russian surplus) all day long online for under $25 although you can spring for much more elaborate systems. Gas masks speak to several of my fetishes including breath play, sensory deprivation, humiliation, objectification and just plain because of the fact that she hates it so much. Anything that falls into that last category tends to rise to the top of my favorite toy list pretty quick. I love the sounds of someone wearing a gas mask. The valve system allows intake only through the inlet and exhalation only through the outlet. Sometimes the best toys are the least expensive.

One of the most frightening types of "gas mask" is the respirator that has the hose attached.  I have seen that used on kink.com where the bound girl in the mask is inhaling from the crotch of another girl.

Hopefully the only type of mask I will don  will have a hose attached will have the hose attached to an air pump for diving.... Stone the crows, you can do all sorts of kinky and erotic things underwater that way..
