RiotGirl -> Slavery (1/28/2006 3:31:22 PM)

Alright, i'm psyched. Absolutely psyched. Okay, mostly psyched, well maybe i am completely :p Just got to the library after a year and a half = ) Woot Woot. And i almost went my normal route of settling for those medieval romances where the knights are these domly guys and they well you know.. with those innocent, yet fiery virginal girls. hehehehe

BUT i thought, WHY settle? Now OF course, the library didnt have the normal "bdsm" books and i of course couldnt remember all the names of them. Erg, i even looked up John Warren's name and came back with nothing = (

So i settled for (which isnt really settling) 2 non fiction books on slavery from the begining of time. 2 great huge books and for the first time in my life, i'm actually excited about reading non fiction!! Woot Woot. LOL Now, i get to go search out the books we've dicussed here and look them up in the library system! i'm actually excited and getting shivers of joy. Heh.

For an amusing thought! Anne Rice's books (under her other name) The claiming of beauty, and beauty's release were listed under "american literature"

Goooooooood only knows why.

Any one else felt abit odd going up to the quiet mouse little librarians with books that have in BIG bold black letters " S L A V E R Y"

heh

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Slavery (1/28/2006 3:38:36 PM)

I wanted this one book and it was when someone you love is kinky and I was bright red trying to tell the library manager what I wanted.

nawwwwwwww

i'm all guts n no brains\

RiotGirl -> RE: Slavery (1/28/2006 3:45:19 PM)

LOL

i just did a search on collarme for "books" Didnt turn up much but aaaaaaaah i just found my list saved on the computer = )

i suppose the embarressment is akin to making one of my ex's (who was slightly homophobic) rent gay porno at his local video store. Hey, i was interested! LOL and then oops, its late and though i wasnt there, i was told how embarressing it was to have to stand there while the person looked up the "title" of the movie to check it back in and so he could pay for the fees.

heh

We've modernized here in Minnesota and have self-check out. Of course, that's not as much fun.

What are the names of the books? Post a note, when you're done, with a review, please!

Ahem, they're called "Slavery" LOL

One of them is simply called Slavery and is by Engerman, Drescher, and Paquette

Its about "the opertaion of slave societies and the effects of those living in them are sugjects of perennial human interest. Drawing on a wide range of ducumentary sources, this Oxford Reader explores the orgins, history, and the realities of slavery from a global perspective. It covers the historical justifications for slavery and the slave trade, as well as abolitionism and slave resistance. Key insights are provided in the writings of slaves, slaveowners, abolitionists, economists, laweyers and historians , as well as biblical and philosophical dicussions. "

Thats what it says on the back of that. Atleast thats the first paragraph.

The other Book which is also called SLAVERY (lol) is Slavery a World History

that should be self explanatory. Tho what it says on the backside of the book sounds pretty interesting too = )

And of course, i'll write up a report on both lol

Hell yes! Omg it was abit funnier then that too. i had an itty bitty person with me too. So there were quite a few non reader books being checked out as well LOL With the non reader checking out TONS of books, videos, music and of course the demanding of checking out my books.

You know i could of pulled of "its for a college class thing" (if needed) if i hadnt also checked out a fiction book called. "The testimony of an irish slave girl" And ooooooo i cant wait to break into that one either!

Funny, all the "slavery" books were right next to the "improve your lovelife/romance/sex books" And next door was retirement books.

i wonder if the library is trying to say something?

yeah i love it too!! i'm pretty much an irish girl with german thrown in!

i'll give you an introduction to what it says on the back

Testimony of an irish slave girl by Kate McCafferty

"In Testimony of an Irish Slave Girl, Kate McCafferty brillantly re-creates this little-known part of the seventeenth century history through Cot's remarkable life. As the novel opens, Cot the survivor of a failed rebellion in which black and irish slaves have conspired to overthrow their masters has been called in for questioning by Peter coote, a disenchanted british doctor who has sold his soul to the governor of the island. She agrees to give her account of the uprising, but only as part of her life story, wanting to set the record straight for posterity. As coote sets down the testimony of Cot Daley, what unfolds is the tale of her amazing life - the brutal journey to barbados, the voilent transitions from beloved Irish child to "another's thing" the harrowing years of fieldwork on the sugarcane plantations, her marrage to an african slave and rebel leader, and the fate of her children. It is both the story of an exceptional woman and profound novel about the relations between slaves and their owners, imagined with power and passion."

"This is the story of Cot Daley, a young girl kidnapped from her home in Galway, Ireland and shipped out to Barbados, where more then fifty thousand Irish sold as indentured servants to the plantation owners of the Caribbean worked the land alonside African slaves. Most of them would never see their familes again"

And an exert from the book

"Once more we were tied and brought up from the sewer where we lay, moaning and squabbling like dogs. Up the narrow ladder, stumping our bare toes against the splintery steps. We had lived for months now in a world of brown and black; the only light a beam of amber soacked up by a wallboard or the folds of a filthy sheet, through the door taht opened twice daily behind Spaniole. Now he led us up the stairs, lifting his forearm against the hatch as we emerged into the quivvering, singing air.... "

I haven't seen the book but I recall a documentary on those prisons on the History Channel a while back and since Ireland hasn't had legalized slavery for a while I suspect that might be the subject.
