OK, it's an over-blown and much hyped headline, I admit. But, here's the story that's happening now...

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/04/06/stolen.plane/index.html

kdsub -> RE: Attack from Canada! (4/6/2009 7:18:07 PM)

Where is phil?..maybe I pissed him off enough to fly down here to St. Louis and try to kick my ass... I always knew he was a flake.

We will know soon enough the plane was forced down on a highway in south eastern Missouri and he is on the run on foot.

I've gotta ask any pilots out there, what is the protocol for when you're being intercepted by military aircraft? I'm guessing the birdie salute is not necessarily signifying "hello." (Or, maybe it is?)

For that matter, how does an F-16 hang with a Cessna at 14,000 feet? Can a Cessna fly fast enough to keep those fighters from stalling?

DarkFury -> RE: Attack from Canada! (4/6/2009 7:22:54 PM)

I wonder if he was trying to escape from Quebec and got confused when he ran out of Tim Horton's coffee?Ya hafta watch those crazy Canadians, they'll steal anything for a joy ride!

Another question, if I may. Is it normal to have a full fuel load onboard a student airplane?

DarkFury -> RE: Attack from Canada! (4/6/2009 7:33:18 PM)

That I don't know. I've never taken flying lesson though I would imagine there would be in case something happened in flight and the student needed to circle several times before being able to land.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, do not not invoke any military pilots here - trust me, my reasons are pure [:o] .

OK, how about if only the civilian pilots answer this? I'm sure the military pilots have pages and pages and training and orders and stuff to follow for their protocol, but does a civilian pilot?

You need to aks Rhi then (aka Georgiapeach). She's alright as well :-) .

An update to the CNN story broadcast by Anderson Cooper (not yet updated on CNN.com) states that the pilot thief has been apprehended. He was born in Turkey in 1977, emigrated to Canada and became a naturalized citizen there in 2008, and was called an "unhappy man" by Canadian authorities. Robot bomb-sniffers surrounded the thief's car at the aviation school but there doesn't seem to be any official reports yet of anything found.

When the pilot landed, he attempted to conceal the plane by parking it under some sort of obstruction, such as a bridge or trees.

kittinSol -> RE: Attack from Canada! (4/6/2009 8:03:38 PM)

Let's face it, it was only a Cessna - I'm watching CNN right now, and I can't quite believe the fuss they're making out of this as if it were a serious international incident. It's hilarious (and tragic at the same time).

You don't think the hysteria comes from the fact that the guy was born in Turkey, do you? Nah, that's impossible, right [8|] ?

sappatoti -> RE: Attack from Canada! (4/6/2009 8:10:52 PM)

In January 2002, a disgruntled student pilot stole a Cessna (or some other type of small airplane) from a Saint Petersburg, FL airport, flew it over MacDill AFB in Tampa, and straight into a bank building in downtown Tampa. Luckily, there was very little fuel on board and there were no explosives packed into it. Inside the wreckage of that plane a note was found, later confirmed to be written in that student's handwriting, that praised Osama bin Laden's attempts of September 11, 2001.

Luckily, no one in the building or on the ground was injured or killed. The bank building did suffer moderate damage but none to the extent where its foundation was significantly impacted. However, the student pilot was killed.

A huge bruhaha came about as to why this small plane was allowed to fly over restricted airspace unchallenged. It wasn't until it swerved back out over Tampa Bay that a US Coast Guard chopper tailed the aircraft. No one anticipated the student's suicide crash into the building.

I bring all this up because small aircraft ARE a big security risk. Even a Cessna, loaded with the right type of payload -- and it doesn't have to be of the explosive kind -- can cause a tremendous amount of damage.

Thank you for filling me in on the details - I had no idea about the Florida incident. This explains the current media hype then... makes much more sense now. Cheers again :-) .

You're welcome Kittin. :-)

Here's a wiki article about that Florida incident.

After 911 everything changed as we all know. When an airplane is stolen ( a cessna or not ) it is no joke. They evacuated the State Capital building in Madison, Wi. in case he was headed there. Maybe they should have just shot him down  And I am not joking about that..

Butch? Are you talking about Philosophy?
He is a peace maker and a gentle soul!

sappatoti -> RE: Attack from Canada! (4/6/2009 8:25:24 PM)

I don't know if shooting the plane down would have been the safest thing to do, without knowing what kind of payload, if any, the plane was carrying. For instance, if there were biological contaminants on board, shooting down the plane would help to spread them out over a large area.

servantforuse -> RE: Attack from Canada! (4/6/2009 8:27:53 PM)

My brother is a pilot and has a Cessna 182. The tanks are always topped off. You never leave an airport with a half tank of fuel. It's a little different than going on a little road trip in the Honda..

kdsub -> RE: Attack from Canada! (4/6/2009 8:30:51 PM)

We must be talking about another phil... The one I know is a little hardheaded and likes to argue…even when wrong. But you’re right I think he is a gentle soul. Just like me.

They had plenty of chances to take him out..I'm really surprised they let him fly around St. Louis.... I think a full speed Cessna could have played hell with the Arch.
