I'm looking for ideas on how to connect lengths of chain to the "D" rings on collars, cuffs etc. Although small padlocks and chain-joiners work, they are not very elegant to my eyes. Ideally, something like a chain link that hinged open and could be secured via a small screw would work, but that would be quite a piece of engineering!

Any ideas?

Quick links and connecting links are two easy ways to do it. The former is easily removable and re-usable, the latter is harder to remove and is single use.

the quick links that stef suggested are certainly what sprung to my mind, also i believe that one can find carabiners/spring clips which are shaped similarly to a chain link (obviously not proper climbing ones, but reasonably strong key chain ones).

Also, though perhaps not exactly what your looking for, i have always thought double ended clips/eyebolt snaps (available from most hardware stores, http://www.bosunsupplies.com/products2.cfm?product=S0176) looked reasonably good

I also found these large carabieners that are intended for organizing the garage. They each can hold 250+lbs. Domme depot is the best!! Known to the commercial markets as Home Depot.
For other ideas you might check out FrugalDomme.com they have TONS of ideas for all kinds of pervables.

Those quick links are nice because they are even stronger than a comparibly sized link of chain. Snap links and those little dog collar clip link, and even panic snaps are all pretty weak. Don't use them on anything that will be stressed.

If you're worried about security, carry a wrench in your toybag to tighten your quick links with. If you tighten them with a wrench, nobody's undoing them without a wrench.

Panic snaps were originally designed for horses. If you're using the correct quality weak should not be an issue. If it can hold 2000# of pissed off beastie it should be able to work with a 200# boy.

Actually, they're designed to let go of 2000 pound horses. And they aren't rated to hold weight.

I have and sometimes use panic snaps. but never for suspension. For suspension, I will only use locking caribiners, chain, quick links, and hammerlocks. If something isn't rated for a working load of at least 4x what your bottom weighs, you're taking chances.

I've seen what happens when rigging hardware fails, and I'm not willing to risk inflicting that upon another person.

Sounds like a trip to the hardware store or home center. Start with looking at the chain connectors. They have all styles from nice brass and crome to heavy galvanized. Many different styles as well.
