angeyeuxbleus -> Hypoallergenic collar (4/9/2009 2:54:34 PM)

My master and I are looking for a collar for me. The only problem is, I have a nickel allergy, and in the past I have gotten rashes on my neck that prevented me from wearing my collar all the time. I don't think either of us wants for me to have to take it off for days at a time. I think he would prefer a leather one, but might be open to metal. The issue with leather is that the rivets and buckles are almost always nickel plated. Even metal ones I've seen (with the possible exception of those way outside our price range) have some parts plated with nickel. I know this is a relatively common allergy, so can anyone tell me how they have gotten around it?

It also can't be anything all that expensive. I'm very good with my hands (so I'm told :-P) and I'm considering breaking down and getting the tools to make one myself. I'm only concerned that due to inexperience it would wind up being of rather poor quality.

Any suggestions?

A friend of mine had a girl with metal allergies.  If you know how to knit chainmail or are willing to learn, you can find niobium jump rings in various colors on the internet.  Niobium is used in pacemakers so it's hypoallergenic.  It's sturdy enough for a collar but is considered a jewelry weight metal so it's easy to work with.  The one he made was gorgeous and looked enough like a necklace to be worn at all times.

The only thing you'll need to be careful with is the hardware you use to fasten it.  If you just want a necklace clasp, you can find nickel-free types in jewelry-making catalogs such as Fire Mountain.  If you want it to lock, you'll have to find one you can wear without a reaction.  Decorative locks do come in 14k gold and sterling silver.  You'll just have to have patience and be willing to spend a little extra for them.

I have a severe nickle allergy ( I blister when I come into contact with it. ) so I have had to do the research : chuckles ruefully.

I made friends with epoxy and just painted it on my jewelry. Not only does it keep it tarnish free, I can actually wear it. ( I don't recommend this if you are allergic to the chemicals in epoxy, even after it dries, of course ) Just don't try to use it on gems, like in rings that have a stone set onto the band. Just the part against your skin should work.

If I remember right, the only precious metal that isn't coated with nickle ( gold is usually coated with it because gold is a soft metal, and nickle strengthens it ) is platinum. If I remember right, anyway.

If you don't want to go the epoxy route, you could paint your jewelry with clear nail polish every two weeks or so. The polish will wear off, of course, whereas the epoxy won't, but it's still an option.

Hope this helps.

Most leather suppliers carry brass buckles and other hardwear, usually for reenactors. Also, instead of rivets, try to get one that is stitched.

Thanks for your suggestions, my master and I have talked and done some poking around on the internet and I'm going to try my hand at chainmail. Now we just need to find a design that he will like. :)

If it turns out well I'll be sure to share pictures.

Cheers.

Save yourself a headache...unless you really want to try. http://www.kittenstoyroom.com/xcart/catalog/collars__chokers_chain_mail_collars-p-1-c-70.html
That site has nice chain mail collars.

Let's try this again...

I'm also allergic to nickel.  So we bought my collar from http://www.licksandlashes.com/

No metal touches the skin when wearing the first 3 collars and cuffs sets on the collar page.  I've been able to weather the collar or cuffs for several days with no problems.

Go to the library and pick up a copy of this book:

I own it and the designs are great.  The Byzantine weave is particularly lovely and the book has instructions for matching necklace, bracelet, and earrings.  Good luck and have fun.

Some of the nicest things I've seen in Niobium were in a Dragonscale weave, which makes for wicked necklaces, bracelets, and belts, but it's a bit of a learning curve to do that one. You need 2 sizes of rings, very specific, and preferably the smaller one in Niobium colors and the larger in bright silver.

I've got tons of rings here I mess with and I still can't get that pattern consistently, but I keep trying.

The results when done well are visually stunning, and chainmail around the neck can be very comfortable and quite a nice feeling.

This place is a great reference to make tons of patterns http://cgmaille.com/

Here is a nice example of the effect you can get with a silvery larger ring and Niobium smaller ones. You could also go with a black larger ring which would look really nice and sort of "dressed up" with bright Niobium colors under it.

You can get almost any color/size/type of rings here... http://theringlord.com/

I got my Niobium color mix and stainless steel rings from them. Great service and knowledeable about anything chainmail related.

Best of luck in whatever you end up doing!!
