While perusing the Wired blog site I came across this interesting article. It appears that research scientists at the Argonne National Laboratory have created metal snakes that seem to assemble, disassemble, and reassemble on their own. While all those currently involved in this research claim they are only using this process to study the origins of life on this planet, could this also be the birth of the Replicators?

Note:
For those who may not know of the Stargate mythology, the Replicators are beings comprised entirely of nanites which could assemble and reassemble themselves into whatever form they needed. They were generally thought of as one of the "villains" of the series and many battles were fought against them as these Replicators attempted to wipe out all traces of humanoid life. Ultimately, the "good guys" (we humanoids) defeated and annihilated the Replicators, though the methods on how to recreate and program them to serve our purpose at any time remain.

With the advances of AI (artificial intelligence), nanotechnology, and now this magnetic bonding method, how long will it take before the three areas are used together? Is it possible that mankind has begun the process of creating its own version of the fictional Replicators?

Any thoughts?

OK, fine. I wasn't a fan of Star Trek: TNG so I wouldn't have known that. Whichever sci-fi show had the concept first is irrelevant to the questions I asked in the OP.

Has mankind begun the process of self-replicating machines?

Somewhere, in an secret underground gov. laboratory, the Replicators have arisen and are hatching their plans to take over the electronic communication system and then the world.

And yes, they've already built a warp engine and a stargate...

Our "mechanical masters" will make themselves known soon...very soon....right after they take on our "reptilian masters"   http://www.thewatcherfiles.com/exposing_reptilians.htm

Okay... (he says, flexing his "nerd" muscles) just supposeing that we did somehow create nano-tech machines that could reassemble themselves into various forms... AND let's suppose they were artificially intelligent (capable of self awareness, and curious about the universe around them)

Why would that be a bad thing?

Science fiction has gotten far too hung up on this "Frankenstien Syndrome" thing. Maybe... just maybe... the little nano critters would be a boon to us. Symbiosis. After all, we wouldn't be in competition with them for food supplies, would we? More than likely, they would be solar powered.. you know, like the early machines in the Matrix movies.

Of course, my mind tends to run along different paths... I wonder how you could turn something like the replicators into sex toys....

The mind boggles!

Be careful not to give them any ideas. The last thing I want is for them to start thinking the same thing about us!

Geeze, Mars....you can't write a story if there isn't a point of conflict...and extinction is a good conflict!  Just ask your Reptilian Masters......

You are talking science, not science fiction ;)

Good grief, if they are going to invent something that replicates itself why don't they start with something useful, like bacon.

It's ok, I've been in touch with 'em. They just want a healthy dose of the profits and of course...refuse to be slaves.

Stage two grey goo apparently. Just as devastating as killer Lego spiders. This is what the Replicators always looked like to me. I was also always impressed how they made smooth curved human versions out of Lego bricks.

ok, that watchers site was just too funny.  i always heard of politicians being referred to as "a snake in the grass" but reptiles???  and btw, i thought the watcher files were highlander material.  anyway, they say that many scientific discoveries come about because someone comes up with a wild idea and tries to make it come true.  is the star trek communicator all that far off from cell phones?  i'm sure ther are plenty of other things we have that are crossover ideas, but at almost 4am i can barely think.

That would not necessarily be anything to be feared, provided that human-kind could keep an open mind about the emergence of these nanotech beings as their own sentient life form. Given the things that we humans have done to other life forms throughout our history thus far, it doesn't appear that we are ready to accept a life-form we created as an equal to ourselves, in my opinion.

In a perfect utopian world we should not fear self-aware, sentient mechanical life.

One would not think that humans and nanotech life forms would be competing for the same supplies but, can we be so sure? For example, let us think about the potential situation where the nanites, through their own learning and experimentation, decide that their best source of energy is the same that we use as our food (since solar energy isn't available in the Earth's crust or deep within its oceans). Then what?

I agree that sci-fi, in general, has cast technological beings as being monsters. Conflict sells stories. It would be nice to think that if something like the Replicators were to be developed, we could all just get along. Unfortunately, with power-hungry humans in the mix, I fear that such technological beings, if constructed and allowed to evolve, may pick up at least some of the eccentricities of humans. In essence, they could be as lovable and/or as hateful as humans are now. We all know how well humans, in general, deal with all of these eccentricities within ourselves.

The mind boggles!

In the early days of Replicator-type machines, they could be controlled via their software/firmware to do whatever we humans would like them to do. Given enough advances in AI however, those machines may become self-aware enough to decide for themselves whether to form into sex toys for human entertainment. I am sure that if enough of the little buggers were exposed to BDSM concepts, those nanites that have an affinity for those concepts could enjoy taking roles within the lifestyle.

A free-flying dominant whip, under the control of no one, whipping a submissive human... interesting.

If you want truly thinking machines you want to go to the Dune books by Frank Herbert. Humanity created thinking machines to do all the work and ended up being enslaved by them for thousands of years.

But it's in human nature to want things easy. And with machines, to give them more of the responsibility that is ours. At some point A.I. will come to conclusions mankind never intended them to. Short, linear term we are good at. Long, wave ripple term we are not good at.
