This is both an opportunity to discuss, and a shameless plug for, CM's newest addition to our forum line-up.  Politics and Religion, located just below Polls and Random Stupidity on your forums list.  As of this posting, it is still pretty bare, but I doubt that will last.

Have you checked it out?  Did you know it was there?

Most things have a political aspect don't they. I'm not really sure what will go in 'off topic' and what will go in 'politics'.

It will probably be more clear after more things get added to it and recognisable patterns form.

Take for example a news story about stem cell research: it's politics, it's religion, it's science and it's off topic because it doesn't relate to BDSM in anyway.

I think we'll just have to wait and see how it comes together, Full.  Some current event items will certainly be in the realm of both Off-Topic and Politics and Religion.

You can go to some places and they have hundreds of delineations. One good thing about broad nondescript categories is that fact it brings people together who have varied interests into one place. There is this other forum and it has politics by region but the people from different regions don't ever come together to discuss world politics as a whole. Instead you have Europeans sticking to European politics and American's sticking to American politics, I think that is a bit of a shame. Similarly if you have a religion area and you put science topics in 'off topic' will the people that like discussing religion bother to see beyond their favourite area to the science topics affecting religion?

You are right though it will all become more clear in time.

I noticed it about 2 hours after it went up.  I started a thread, but it got moved to Polls and Other Random Stupidity.  I'm not sure why it was done, seeing as off topic discussion seemed to serve the purpose, but hey, more new threads!  I think it's a good idea.

Where does gay marriage belong, politics or religion?

Who knows?
I am not sure I am ready to "go there" yet.

It's too soon!
Will we get veggie chips and organic fruit there?
Are you going there kittin?

I asked the question because a "politics and religion" thread is so specialised. There's a thread on gay marriage next door that was created before the "pols & rel" forum: would it have been moved over there, or would it have remained on off topic? In any event, I don't really care either way, as long as we don't get muzzled for being off topic from being on off topic. If you get my meaning :-).

Neither place.  Both the politicians and the religious types oughta keep out of it.

My first thought about the new space was that the politics threads we'd normally see go to P&RS would wind up there, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

No guidelines in place yet.  I'm actually going to agree with Kitten in wondering how the determinations will be made.

For now, I figure if it politics from go, that's where it should start.

I was referring to the foruming sectioning labelling obsession with ontopicness. It goes without saying that I completely agree with you :-) .

I like the idea of having the MMA-Free-4-All section being separate from discussions where we are other off-topic subjects.
