The person who I learned from required that I be able to 1. cut between 1" and 1/2 " off an uncooked spagetti noodle consistantly and then also required that I be able to hang a single sheet off toilet paper from a string and move the paper with just the air from the crack without tearing the paper 50 times in a row before I was considered ready to actually play with one on a live person.
If the person is unwilling to show proof of competency then maybe you need to rethink who you are trusting yourself to.

Nicely put, Archer. It's just this kind of skill that is needed for throwing a bullwhip, or a single/signal tail of any kind. Whips are very dangerous implements of mass destruction in the wrong hands. They can, as has been stated, put out eyes, break skin horridly, and some of the heavier ones can break bones.
However, the very first time i heard one, that sound of C-R-A-A-A-C-K, i was hooked. i was absolutely drawn to the danger of it.
Luckily, in the local BDSM club here in my town there was a Whip Master who had many, many years at throwing one, and the Domme whom i was playing with at the time, introduced me to Him, as She knew how interested i was.
He introduced me to His bullwhip veeerrryy sllooowly.........just cracking the whip around my body at first and then occasionally bringing it to my body and rubbing it on me. He was very wise in how to help overcome my fear, believe me i was sweating blood, and when He saw i was ready, the action began, and i've never regretted it.
As for the Cane? The Domme i was playing with hit me with an acrylic one, about as big around as my little finger, three times and it instantly made it to my hard list........[&:]
Give me an experienced whip thrower anytime over the cane......acrylic ones, anyway.
Edited to add: This is my first post, and i have no idea why it says "Vanilla" under my User name. i am decidedly NOT vanilla. I'll have to go see how to get that changed....
