Hmm, I'm a music major and took one class just studying opera where we'd take a role and listen to a few different professional singers sing it. Considering that she's most likely *not* as well trained as a professional opera singer (which I'm guessing is what you mean by someone who can 'really' sing), and likely even as most, if not all, 'stars' of the day... she's amazing. There's a lump of raw talent there... probably more than any 'normal' singer ever has. If she's taught more skill... well, it'll pretty much ensure her staying power. She needs to be taught the proper methods of vibrato, yes... but her natural grasp on the technique is the method that they usually use to start teaching people how to do it. She probably needs to be taught what on key *is* to know that she drifts off key (and, really, I've seen/heard performances of even professional singers who go off key on easier songs more often). The point is that this is a *raw* talent, which you don't get to see that often... and occasionally (in my opinion anyway) that is BETTER than one of the most trained voices in existence (or, at least, more moving). As a future music educator, this sort of performance excites me to no end. I *WANT* students like this because I want to work with that sort of talent! Getting to do that is one of the reasons I've seen *other* people getting INTO my field (moreso to get a chance to work with talent and create performers, rather than musical citizens, which is its own debate).
