MissJanice2 -> BlackBerry poll! (4/15/2009 5:07:03 AM)

I have a couple of questions  for you fine folks.  My cell is getting ready to bite the dust, and when it does, I want to upgrade to a AT &T Blackberry.  This blackberry is the one that serves as a computer where I can update documents and vertually do away with my desk top.
Do you like your blackberry? What are some issues you are having with it, and what about the costs you are expericing?  I am doing some research before I spend $400 for a telephone.

Best Wishes,

You may not appreciate this, but I suggest that you broaden your search.  You want a smartphone, which is a phone that acts as a computer. I am a diehard Palm aficionado, and love my Treo 755p.

That said, you need to accept that NO phone will replace a desktop, but will augment it.  Data input is simply too laborious, and the screen is too small.  While surfing, only one window can be opened at a time.

However, the ability to update documents in the field is wonderful.  When I was looking for a home, I maintained a list of prospective homes in a spreadsheet.  Asking price, sq ft, address, etc., and a comment field that I filled in from the phone when I saw the house.  I also had the ability to take photos of houses I liked.

Do some research on features and which ones you will want.  You have already stated that  MS Office compatibility is something you want (note - it is common to have read-only versions of PowerPoint that will not let you edit files from your phone).  How about texting, camera, web access, games, email, to-do lists, calendar/appointments, contact lists?  How about the coolness factor (The Treo fails this)?  Palms are legendary for having good to-do lists, calendar/appointments, and contact lists.

A dude I know got a blackberry..bonus that came with da job. He returned it because it was way so complicated that he gave up trying to figure out how it worked.
Besides, I'd never want to spend $400 on a phone that MAYBE lasts 2 years...ok 4 years tops....heck one of my phones only lasted 6 months[8D]
I haven't heard many love stories when it comes to blackberry tbh so if I were you I'd look at more than just blackberry that "substitutes" your desktop..but like Steven said, it will never substitute it completely.

I just want my phone to make calls no matter what I am.

If they can make a phone that does that I will be happy.

I bought a Camera for Pictures -takes better pictures than any phone.
I bought an MP3 Player for Music - Holds more music and doesn't ruin files better than any phone
I Bought a Computer for Documents - WAY BETTER THAN A PHONE
I was Given a Lap Top so now anything I need to do away from home I can.

Why get a Phone will lower quality abilities just to have it all in one?

In Realitry I don't want my phone to do ANYTHING other than make calls because when they do you get stuff you don't want when you don't want it.

Simple as this once Cell Phones took Pictures I was required to take pictures of things and asked to do so off the clock.

My Time is My Time Work time is Work time, I believe never the twain shall cross.

I like having my cute little phone with the querty keyboard to send brief text messages to family members when I don't feel like talking and I know they are just like me in that respect.

I like my desktop for it's awesome 22 inch LCD screen, and I adore my laptop for it's mobility and ability to work online anywhere my cell phone does.

Never would I want to try and find one thing to replace all three.

Well said everyone.  I think I will probably get a regular cell phone to replace my phone.  I bought a camera phone, and never use it.  If I don't use that, I doubt if I will be updating that many documents either.   You all made good points.

Best Wishes,
