Hello everyone T_T I swear I'm at my wits' end! I have a generic audition next month for a community theater musical for the summer. I'm having trouble finding a good solo to prepare for it! In the past the group has been OK with not doing songs from shows... but for this one it's a requirement (we're pulling in a different set of directors) that the audition piece must be from memory, a capella, and from another show. My usual method of "Star Spangled Banner" will not work here >.> I sing tenor, btw, with a range from Ab bottom of bass clef staff, to F# at the bottom of the treble clef staff normal voice, with almost another octave (from that G to the next E or so) on top of that in falsetto (for those that are counting, yeah that's just under 3 octaves). These are the ranges where it sounds good, not necessarily the 'strain' point. I can't really pull off more fatherly type of rolls... my voice just sounds too 'young' really. Some songs that I have access to and have practiced before include (Those I've used for auditions for this group in the past will be bolded, same with songs from shows I've done with them): Sentimental Man - Wicked Wonderful - Wicked I'll Cover You (Reprise) - Rent (I don't really think I can pull off the gospel aspect of this song that well, actually >.>) A Bit of Earth - The Secret Garden Fathoms Below - The Little Mermaid Music of the Night - The Phantom of the Opera I've also tried singing these songs along with the soundtracks, but do not have the music for them to practice: Serious - Legally Blonde Reefer Madness - Reefer Madness Listen to Jesus, Jimmy - Reefer Madness Mary Jane - Reefer Madness Gaston - Beauty and the Beast All I Care About - Chicago If I Were a Rich Man - Fiddler on the Roof The Girl Gets Around - Footloose Grow For Me - Little Shop of Horrors Pretty much any male solo from Dr. Horrible or the Musical Episode of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (though one of those would be pushing it with the new requirement). So now you have a taste of exactly the type of stuff I can sing... >.> Can anyone suggest a good tenor solo that I could use for an audition? Preferably something that would give good example to my range...? Thanks, all.

If you can pull off anything from Phantom, that is phenominal. I'm also partial to anything from Guys and Dolls!!

If you're interest in Fiddler music I can always fax it to you (piano score) What about something from Jesus Christ Superstar?

I've never actually heard/seen Jesus Christ Superstar, to be completely honest... >.> And I'm reluctant to do 'Rich Man' because (in addition to the reason cited above), well... it goes kinda low, and is really meant for a more darker-toned voice (I liken it to a 'father' role, partially because he's a father, but also because that's just part of what comes from actual technique requirements).

Music of the Night is SO beautiful though. Which part are you trying out for, or do you know?

Nope, it's just a general audition. They'll place people after all the auditions are done :) I really like that it's done that way, because I hate gunning for a part, especially for a play I've never seen before.

Oooo, I totally missed this suggestion. The main problem with the Sweeney Tod pieces I've tried (other than them being Sondheim and ridiculously hard XD) is that I don't feel confidant I can learn them for an a cappella audition by the first or second week of may.

~FR~ Thanks everyone for the suggestions :) I'm trying to get a copy of the song "Anthem" from Chess, but barring that I'll do "Dulcinea" from Man of La Mancha (my brother has the sheet music, I just completely forgot that show)! Everyone was amazingly helpful/awesome :D @xxblushesxx If it has Frank Sinatra in it, I'll likely not like it :P I despise the guy (for no good reason, either, though I do have one reason) EDIT: I got the title wrong XD

There's a fabulous tenor solo from Les Mis.....I think it's just called "God On High" (...hear my prayer....) If you can nail it, there won't be a dry eye in the house. Also, "You Are Sixteen, Going On Seventeen" from The Sound of Music might be good. Or, "On The Street Where You Live" from My Fair Lady. ("I have often walked down this street before....but the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before....") If you something from Fiddler, make it "Wonder of Wonders, Miracle of Miracles". From Oliver, "Where Is Love?" is another tissue soaker. Break a leg! [:)]

Frank Loesser. Loesser and Sinatra had famous fights about how Sinatra was doing Guys and Dolls which ended with the two of them never speaking again. Loesser wanted his music and story done his way. My reason's slightly less legitimate [:-] Y'see, there's a Jukebox in the dining hall at my old college, which also has two or three albums that are specifically Frank Sinatra... and around 2pm or so the staff likes to line all of them up in a row T_T That also happened to be the only time during the week for an entire semester that I could eat during the week. Five days a week for more than 16 weeks... "Luck be a lady" is completely ruined for me :( Among pretty much anything he sings, especially recorded with him.
