Where did she say that?  KittenSol didn't say talk to the taliban (or anyone else in this situation) and that would solve anything.  I saw her say something totally different as a solution and of course the fact that we (gov) shouldn't have supported them in the first place.

Thank you, Lockit.

Was it really a dig, or more an expression of the futility of such actions ? Y'all probably agree at the root of the issue, but some people have rough edges and others can be abrasive.

In that light, what can be done ? Really, they are how many miles away ?

Women in this country did not gain sufferage by sitting on the porch, waiting for a letter in the mail stating that they can now vote. Granted the situation is quite a bit more difficult there, but a Woman can pretty much destroy a Man's home life. There are ways. Even before that, in this country there were Mothers against our getting into WW2, they were put down. Marching in the streets does invite media attention, but there are still other things.

Thinking of what that would entail would require knowing more about day to day life there. Personally if I were an Afghani Woman, in light of such a law I would probably smear pork all over my body. In other words, turn the power of the enemy against itself. That is the only way one can win a battle from an inferior position.

Last but not least, if I were an Afghani Man I would never support such a law. It is strong prima facie evidence that we cannot satisfy our Women. Embarrassing to say the least. Really, are they that bad in bed ? Think about it.

Her solution is to get more women in government, everywhere. Thats nice. The taliban responsible for the killing in Afganistan doesn't seem to want that to happen.

They didn't want it in America either, but women fought for the freedoms they now have.  Of course it wasn't legal to kill your women folk like in some countries, but many women suffered greatly to fight for the right to do more than be wives and mother's and subject to their husbands or male relative's.  If there were a divorce back then... guess who got the um's?  Women couldn't vote or work most jobs or anything that many of us take for granted now.

It did not take military action to free the women of America and in some part may be needed in other countries, but some of these countries before some groups came into power, had women who were educated and were doctors and were in government.  Our country and others helped certain groups become more powerful and those women lost a great deal.

Even if kittensol or anyone else has a different solution than you do... there is no need to be insulting. Even if kittensol were wrong...  But certain ways tend to make people want to slam dunk someone.. I get that and have done it myself.  But from seeing some of your post... yeah.. okay... argue just to argue.

Lockit -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 9:18:45 AM)

That's for sure Mike... I can imagine fighting for rights here in America... but there... you could be killed.  Far different.

slvemike4u -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 9:30:57 AM)

And the killers would have the "law" on their side....actually hard for western minds to wrap itself around that ,isn't it?

Lockit -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 9:46:42 AM)

I think so Mike.  It is something we can somehow understand and relate to.. but to actually live it, I don't think we can come close to understanding.  I mean we can know in our minds what is happening and feel the horror to some degree, but to live it, breath it, walk it... and be subject to it... I am not sure we can fully get it.  Many know what it is like to live with an abusive spouse.  The anger, the fear, the confusion, the stuck... the pain, the horror... the lack of sleep, isolation and on and on.  Here you know if they kill you they will most likely be caught and punished.  There... they may be cheered on, be hero's and have every right.  You mean nothing as a woman in a sense.  Not just a man making you mean nothing, but a whole system, country, all males and some females...

We can have compassion and understanding... but until we walk head's covered... in their shoes... it is hard to fully understand.

slvemike4u -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 9:53:18 AM)

Wello at the risk of injecting humor where there is precious little...I am not actually in to the whole wearing ladies garments thing anyway.....(a pair of panties now and then..okay,but the whole 9 yards thing,no thanks,I don't have the legs for it,...lol)

Lockit -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 10:15:41 AM)

Oh.. I see Mike... well the way I hear it... you would need the full nine yards for your panties. [8|]

hlen5 -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 10:53:22 AM)

So where does Mike live, Lockit??

Seriously, I can't imagine braving ostrascism, and even death to speak for equal rights. The suffragettes here risked nearly as much. There are accounts of billyclubs swinging freely before and after demonstrations and arrests here in the States.

In Afghanistan, it's more of a near certainty when any Talib can swing a strick at any "offense" he sees from any woman walking by.

Lashra -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 12:32:58 PM)

I never "whined" about it but I did make the statement that I hope they stand up for themselves. That is the only way change occurs is if you stand up for yourself and fight for what you believe in. Otherwise you are forgotten about by the powers that be and the rest of the world. Hopefully more brave women (and men) will stand up and overthrow these ignorant power mongers.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 3:04:53 PM)

~FR~

So how many are applying to the IRC to go to Afghanistan and help?

kittinSol -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 3:09:42 PM)

Those that don't have young children to look after, presumably.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 3:11:07 PM)

Good reason. How about how many are donating funds tagged specifically for Afghanistan IRC mission?
