What do you mean Orion?

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 3:15:19 PM)

Well when I feel strongly about something I put more material support into the thing I feel strongly about. An example being the homeless suffering here in Atlanta, we went out during the winter and gave out blankets and thermal shirts. I think one of my friends handed out those easy open cans of soup. Was wondering how many are putting material support into this effort.

I doubt that many could afford to go there if the government would allow us to.  We could inflame things if we were there and make it worse.  I would have to put a lot of thought into doing something like that becasue of what I must do here and simply not having the money for it.  Something like that takes a lot more thought than heart tugs and anger in wanting to help.

However... anything that we can do here I would do.  I just haven't yet figured out what can be done.

Is that really a fair question?  Going to another state in the USA and not facing people that hate american's in the first place, who do awful things to women in general is far different.

What would you suggest we do or are you just challenging us?  And... hell... a few men wouldn't hurt the cause I am sure.

So how many are applying to the IRC to go to Afghanistan and help?
And short of doing that ones good thoughts are dubious?

I have not done the research, but I am sure there are several groups dedicated to helping them. Research them to make sure your donations are not lining the pockets of someone, and donate if you can.

I think it is an absolutely fair question. If someone is outraged, they should do something. If they are just mildly commenting on their dislike, then that is all it is. Many have posted with what appears to be some pretty outraged feelings, and they can make it difference in any cause if they get directly involved somehow.

I am trying to provoke some actual thought. Personally I see it as a cultural issue in another country, and unless it spills over into my country or effects the citizens of my country, I am usually pretty indifferent.

If you make the solution gender based, then the problem is not being solved, it is just changing forms. I am sure that a few more people getting involved would not hurt, but at the root is a cultural issue that cannot be legislated away, it has to be taught via their culture.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Blog about Afghan women marching against law (4/16/2009 4:45:11 PM)

Are they? I wouldn't know, as I am not one of these internet psychics that "know" someone's feelings. I read the text, and process it as monotone as possible. If this cause means a lot to someone then they will do something. If it means a little, then they will do a little. If it means nothing, then they will do nothing.

Personally Orian I am trying to locate the group I was with that was writing letters and protesting years ago.  They were teamed up with women in the countries that were under oppression.  I haven't heard back yet, but will post it if I do.  Until then.. let's see what they have been up to and what might be going on.

Personally I sent a sizable check to an organization that will help these people. So as far as I am concerned I have done my bit to help. Some people view this as a "cultural" issue, I view it as a war on a humanity hiding behind the labels "culture" and "religion".

It never fails to amaze me how some feel that one thing or another isn't their problem.  It isn't happening to them.  When I did speaches on homelessness, no one thought it could happen to them until I asked them how many pay checks they were from homelessness.  No one thought they would have an accident the day they had one.  No one thought a divorce would happen to them.  How many Jew's were slaughtered before it was stopped?  Who is going to deal with the social issues of American's?

When it happens to you or someone you love?  Or when you realize that anything could happen to anyone if no one does a damn thing about it.  So don't care about other people in other countries... how about who are in your country and what are you doing?  What do you do to fight gang warfare.. or what have you done?  What socail change have you worked for?

When I directed the shelter... I could get someone to donate money for the homeless.  To get them to actually come to the shelter and meet the women and off spring and help... omg you would think they were contagious and there wasn't an hour in any day of the month they could give up.

I doubt that many of us need someone to help us think and challenge us to do things Orian.  Some of us are already doing all we can in different area's.  But thanks for the thought... now... what are you doing for American's or are they not your problem too? As long as there are problems... there is a need for people to do something... Not just once in a lifetime.

This is a slippery slope. When someone believes their morals and ethics are so superior, that they are willing to force them on others, it can lead to many things that are not good. I view the problems each culture goes through as a progression of Human Behavioral Evolution. The reason that people are the way they are, is because of what has occured to them in their past.

Some see it as harsh. So be it. I will keep my charity local, and do not knock others if they want to help elsewhere.

One of the things I have helped with in the past. I have helped directly (giving out blankets I purchased, working in the Josea Williams feed the hungry dinners, etc.). I never knocked anyone for not choosing to assist with those things. I saw that it was something I felt strongly about, so I did something.

Cannot save the world, but each person can do something for the causes they work within. If just one person decides to get off their keister and do something about this, then this exchange has been worth it. The links you provided will likely help someone if they truly want to help.

My problem is not with someone that doesn't want to help, but it does irk me at the flag wavers that do nothing but complain about a problem.

I have cleaned streams, worked at non-profit animal shelters, worked with helping the homeless here in my city. If I felt like doing something abroad, I would probably have joined the Peace Corp, given to a charity that aids directly, or something else. My prompting was to get those that just complain, to do something if they feel so strongly about it. Otherwise help out next door, down the street, local youth club, or anything that assists in something you feel strongly about.

Wanted to add: You are doing something, but from my exposure to people, most just bitch about things and do not do a damn thing. If you changed the word "many" to "some", I would agree with you.
