Cool, & totally not surprised, I imagine I'm not the only poet drawn to it's enforced brevity . . . . . I'm still new to being a 'Twit-head' (lol), but I'll keep that in mind . ... Thanks, aravain . ... .

Oh, another sorta-Twitter related thought:

Long before there ever was a tweet to be found online, my extended family were using the term 'twitterpated' as a euphemism for 'so excited as to be useless', as in, "Don't get all twitterpated about that." . .. . . . Just seems so relevant now . . .. lol

Not sure what the point is I guess you need an interesting life so you can say things like:

'I'm currently sky diving'
'I'm currently mountain climbing'
'I'm currently snorting cocaine'

rather than

'I'm currently using my thumbs to communicate in broken English about how crap my life is. I only found out how crap my life is by suddenly being made to type things I'm currently doing and realising I have nothing to type between my blogs, chat, second life, other things that distract me from the outside world and that old fashioned thing known as face to face communication.'

Is that less than 144 words good I can post it on Twitter.

It's 140 characters, actually (the letters and spaces all put together)...

I dunno, I still get out and see other people, but this gives me a good outlet for those times that I *can't* get out and see specific other people.

If you use small letters you can fit in 144 characters they say.

Yep, I Tweet.  I have it linked to my LiveJournal and MySpace.  It's good for making little notes of things that are significant at the time but aren't major enough for a full journal entry.

Prefatory note: I've always wanted to live in the future, so I've always felt a deep chasm between myself & all those longing for their nostalgic pasts . . . . . .

& from that perspective I've generally been amused at the usual alarums raised at this or that new technology, an inevitable phenom . . . . . . All the scathing wit displayed (everywhere, not just here) regarding Twitter is not much different than the cutting witticisms I've heard directed at the internet, or even personal computers, over the last 3 or so decades that I've had a reasonably adult consciousness & awareness . ... . . & thru reading I know the same kinds of skepticism greeted the telephone, the car, the rocket, radio, television, & a whole host of other technologies that most of us at least use, even if we discount their value . . . . . .

Here's another part of what forms my mental framing around these issues of new technology:

When I was 12 I set out to 'be a writer'. I read everything I could lay hands on about what other writers had to say about writing. They said a lot of things, but 'write' was neck-&-neck with 'read' at the head of the list. I also noted with quite a bit of envy / jealousy that the 19th century writers had an 'unfair' advantage in that letter writing & journal keeping & such were all the rage during that time, but in the 1970's & 1980's (when this was initially an issue for me) letter writing was a dead art for all intents & purposes, & it was looking like 'the young' were in danger of becoming de facto illiterates out of a sheer lack of interest in anything textual. (The great teevee-will-eat-our-brains bugaboo was still seeming quite relevant back then . .... . )

Without the 'assist' of a culture of textual interaction, writing the 5 or 10 pages a day that I have as my ideal was a lot more work. For a long time I struggled to produce a page a day. Not just the social milieu played a role, there were other things, but . .. .

Fast forward 20 or 30 years, & I'm surrounded by a letter writing culture, a time & place where everyone at every literacy level is engaging in random acts of text, with more ways to do so emerging every few years. I'm delighted. My fantasies have come true, I'm romping in some of my finest dreams these days.

I write an easy 20 pages a day these days. It's all about habits.

Those Victorian letter writers had the advantage of their cultural milieu, but not all were going to be Dickens or Twain or Dickinson or whoever, nor will all ours be Thomas Pynchons or T. Coraghessan Boyles or Maya Angelous, but if that's the only point, well, I live in a richer universe than that. Art of all kinds delights me, but I take special delight in the 'naive', the untutored & untrained, the underappreciated & the easily overlooked . . .. .

If I had a superpower I'd pick invisibility, undetectability cuz I want to know what kind of random weirdnesses & ordinarinesses others engage in -- especially my 'heroes' . . . .. . I can only relate to the feet-of-clay part, since so much of me feels made of that stuff . . . . . . So I like to hear all those random details of ordinary & not-so-ordinary lives, it cheers me quite a bit to know that David Lynch has plenty of mundanity in his craziness, I like to feel that sense of connection . . . . . . .

*shrugs shoulders*

Cheers, folks.

I spend all my time trying to NOT know what celebrities do or think.  Sounds like Twitter would be the equivalent to an I.V. drip of Entertainment Tonight.

I dont, I dont have the time, the last thing I need is more distractions from work:)
I have google and skype , I have yahooo but rarely turn it on, only if I know someone is trying to get hold of me>

I second that. I have a few professional accounts that give site updates. I understand that it's best not to use it just as a broadcast medium, but I'd get way to sucked in if I started replying and using it to chat. At some point I do plan to hire someone to keep up with it and use it in the way it's intended (2 way vs. 1 way)

butterfly, laTigresse, as a fellow closet gossip girl I have to my duty and inform you that if you only go to Perez's site you're missing out. Check out Dlisted sometime.1000% funnier (and a little meaner if you're into that ;)

Some of the commenters are rather funny themselves, and at the least they don't turn into flame wars.

I don't, because I just don't have that kind of free time.
BUT I did sign up just so I could add myself to Ashton Kutcher's list, I love how the Ashton/CNN battle played out.

The thing that disturbs me is all the kids texting and twittering when they are supposed to be learning. Keep those phones out of class.

Those kids are lucky I am not running the school. It would be a "no cell phones allowed" school. Seriously....they are not necessary at all.

Actually, they are lucky I am not their mother. I see no need for them to have cell phones at all. None.

Buy LaTigress a drink! I swear, most kids these days look like they have a growth coming out of the side of their head. You would think the world would fall apart if you took their cell phones away. I think I turned on MY cell phone for a few minutes a couple weeks ago (shrugs) and texting, yeah right, like I'm going to try and type something I could have said in a 5 second phone call. And no...I don't twitter, I'm lucky if I update my status on myspace every couple days. I'll stick to e-mail, it's more convenient and I don't have to talk to anyone unless it's my idea.

I don't twitter, mainly because I'm not a bird....

I found it kind of funny watching this one girl who put her hair in a funny way and had her entire video ->  fast paced to sound like a chipmunk....

Funny....

P.S.  If you Tweet, then your a twit, IMHO.  Keep some things private, like when you powder your nose!

Talking about twittering, anyone hear about how eagles mate?  I recently read a journal entry by someone on Collarme and was, hmm, interesting.....

Talking about this, anyone have some EAGLE porn?  Preferably Bald Eagle PORN!!

Oh, in slo - mo also, but please don't use micro-waves on our poor defenseless birds....it kills them by frying their brains.....US battleships use to destroy birds with their old-tech radar.....Its how we eventually learned how to make micro-wave boxes to cook IMHO...lol......

I twitter...but rarely.  I'm not that interesting!

Twitter is all about the "I" am doing x, y, z.

But at least it is only 140 characters!

No tweeting for me (along with no SMSing and IMing only on occasion).

no TXT/IM??? ...how can you live??
you don't call people either??

I do not engage in one minute phone calls nor messages limited to 140 or 160 characters. I grew up in an age where if people wanted to communicate with each other, they did so in substantive conversations, whether they be meeting and talking on the street (or any where else), written letters, or making the time for long phone calls. The concept of a sound or idea bite wasn't present.

I also do not tweet, and very rarely do I "IM."  I text a bit, but I am a voracious phone whore.  I get on the phone and talk with my CM girls for an hour at a time or more.  The conversation isn't over till the battery is dead and I can't find the charger.  LOL...

~FR~

Maybe it's a generational thing (or the fact that cell phones give me an immense headache when using them), but I can't *stand* talking on the phone. I think it's *less* personal than written/text communication, especially if it's a short conversation (and I would go further and say that it's the *least* personal type of communication out there)... as such, I feel very uncomfortable when talking on the phone to just about anyone who's not my mother (who, admittedly, I'll talk to until I start to see stars due to the aforementioned headache problem).

And, yeah, I view Twitter as immensely more personal (even though it's little more than a status update) than a five to ten minute phone conversation.
