junecleaver -> Arm and shoulder flexibility. (4/23/2009 10:20:26 AM)

Basically, I'll explain my situation.  I do yoga every morning from a podcast.  I'm no expert with the whole yoga thing though.  Stretching just makes me feel good.  My lower body is fairly flexible such as splits.  I've done gymnastics, volleyball, etc, but I have never had a lot of arm flexibility.  I'd really like to be tied up with my arms behind my back...like tied together at the elbows, then at the wrists.  I've seen it many times on kink.com type sites and a few times in person.  When I ask people how they became so flexible, they say they were born that way.  When I research possible stretches, I never find exactly what I am looking for.

So my questions are...

Has anyone who could not touch their elbows together behind their back had luck eventually reaching that level of flexibility?  If you have, what sort of stretching did you do to get there?  Did you need a partner to help?

Looking forward to success stories I hope?

uh if your not built that way ... your not built that way....  think of it this way if your born with huge tits no amount of yoga, stretching, playin sports, if gonna make them bigger or smaller>  it is what it is

I'm the same way, wishing i could put my arms behind my back like the video girls do.  Have you tried clasping your hands behind your back then leaning forward and pushing your arms as high as you can?  also crossing one arm over your chest holding it tightly with the other might help.  Could also be that your joints just wont let you move your arms like that, especially if you are already doing simular stretches in your yoga.

the broadness of ones back also could have something to do with it *ponders.*

Ok first off stretching and breast enlargement have no common ground at all, dumb analogy... Anyway, yes if you keep stretching you will eventually be able to touch your elbows. What you need to do is relax the tendons that control the rotation/movements in your arm/shoulders and joints. You just need to be very careful and not over do it. If you try to bend your body that fast you risk torn tendons and muscles, maybe even dislocation of joints. Go slow and be careful.

Another deciding factor, how much mass you have in your back. Either muscle or fat, could keep your elbows from meeting.

Those are the stretches that I do and I'm now able to touch my elbows behind my back. I do each one for about 30 seconds then switch sides 3 times, 5-6 times a week. My advice to you would be to have someone pull your elbows back and pay attention to which muscles that you feel tension in. Then find stretches to work those. For me it was my upper arms.

There is some genetic component as some people are more flexible in certain muscles than others, so I can't guarantee you'll be able to ever touch your elbows but if you stretch the right muscles you should be able to get closer.

ooooookay this was too much for my curiousity
after a lot of stretching...almost losing my balance..and a tons of weird hand..manipulations I have discovered that my back gets in the bloody way!! maybe my upper arms aint long enough[&:] sheez i still wouldn't want to have longer arms
and OUCH my elbow just made a strange sound[:(][:(] stupid thread!!!!!!!

after doing a bit of googling I discovered that the majority of girls cannot do it even though some can.

and after a few more attempts I discovered that it can be a great way to bring up old shoulder injuries...ooor elbow injuries if you're that unlucky too so I'm gonna quit trying omg ouch..maybe it's easier if you get help doing it, but heck I don't think it's worth it[8|]

I used to do Pilates twice a week, was a lot more flexible, and still never came near getting my elbows together. I think it's something you either are born with the capability of or you aren't. And I'm not!

I am not even going to try, they won't even meet in the front due to boobage getting in the way.

I don't think it's a matter of being born that way, but after a certain age, it's harder to get ligaments and tendons to stretch. I'm the opposite - my elbows nearly touch if I wear an armbinder, and I can get them pretty close just by holding my arms behind my back. One of my shoulders has greater range of motion than the other, though. I can't do splits, though I've improved somewhat since I started doing gymnastics, and I am working on my flexibility through my hips.

The "hot" kind of yoga might help, or stretching on your own while in a hottub, sauna, or other moist-heat place. Having a partner help you stretch can increase range of motion faster/more effectively than doing it on your own, though you need to be careful not to have them overdo it. Combining stretching with massage can help ease tight muscles.

Lynnxz -> RE: Arm and shoulder flexibility. (4/23/2009 9:10:19 PM)

Stretches might help... but I don't ever do any and I can rest my forearms and elbows together quite comfortably... then he ties them like and it's no longer comfortable... hum. Can't ever win around here. [:D]
I used to be able to fold my shoulders back and have them touch for a second or two as well...  but I think the extra weight put a stop to that.

Joseff -> RE: Arm and shoulder flexibility. (4/23/2009 9:18:46 PM)

At one time I could easily touch my elbows behind my back, my left arm would actually extend past the limit of my right. Of course I have never wanted them to be tied that way, or any way, for that matter. Now with my arthritis etc, I can barely touch my fingertips behind my back. Enjoy your flexibility while you have it.

The hell you say...  no kidding   The point that other got that seems lost on you, was pretty simple.  Some ppl have the body type for it and some don't.  You can yoga now until your 80 and it aint gonna get your elbows much fucking closer.

Hope I cleared up what I thought was a simple analogy.

Thanks for all the helpful tips, guys.  I'm definitely going to give those shoulder exercises a try.

And I envy all of you naturally flexible people. [;)]
