How do you construct & or read profiles?


I don't have a CollarMe profile;

Status: offline 		This topic of constructing & / or reading profiles might seem kinda frivolous or otherwise not worth thinking about, discussing, or etc, to some, but I am genuinely interested in hearing thoughts on this subject . . . . .

However, I'd make the argument that the profiles can be profound tools . . . . .

Constructing Your Profile?

Do you like putting together your profile? (I know from reading them that's lots don't . .. . . ) Has it helped you to understand yourself or BDSM in any way? Are there parts of the profile thing you like better, or dislike worse, than other parts? Any questions you'd like to ask others about putting together profiles?

Reading Profiles?

Do you rarely or frequently pull up full profiles, or do you mostly look at profiles from the 'Home' page? Do you read the interest list first, view all pics first, or skim profile or journal text first? Any questions you'd like to ask others about reading profiles?

Status: offline 		I change my profile around -- a lot -- but I notice most others don't.

If I was in seeking-out-mating-material mode, I'd tend to see my profiles, & journal & message board entries as my 'dating curriculum vitae', the resume of my love life, in a sense . . . . ..

I find reading thru profiles to be an education in itself . .. . . I've yet to read a 'real profile'* that was some kinda stereotype of kink; the combinations of interests continue to delight & astound me in their diversity & seemingly bizarre compoundings . . . .

So, for instance, after viewing 'all pics', I tend to scan the interest list from 'Hard limits' up thru the 'Live Fors' first, then I'll scan whatever profile text -- if it's short enough I'll read thoroughly, if it's too long I'll skim , & then I'll read the first coupla journal entries if there are any . ... . That's my generic run thru for the many many many profiles I'm just lookin' at casually; in the very few cases where I'm genuinely attracted to the person, I tend to carefully read the profile text (until I get to the place where I realize we just wouldn't work) . . .. .

I'm not always sure what any data I take in 'means', frequently I just note stuff & move on . . .. Into that category is where a lot of my profile perusings goes . . . . .

I note things like whether the person uses all the categories in the interest lists (either the sets 'Lives For', 'Loves', etc, or the 'Expert', etc set), or which subset of those categories are used . . . . . For instance I've noticed that lots of dominants do not use the 'Hard Limit' category, & many who identify as submissive or slave do . . ..

I have discovered that I quite like the process of constructing my profile . . .. . Amongst other things, for me it has unfolded as a tool for self-love . .. . . lol . . . . . The more I muck about with my profile, the more I like me . . . . . lol . . . . Which means that I change it around whenever I feel the need . . . . . .

I've also found these profile tools to be useful for continuing to think / feel / discover who I am & how I fit into the wider universe & the BDSM world . . . . .

* A soon to be trademarked term that loosely means: a profile that contains some combination of: (a) lots o' pics o' ordinary people; & / or (b) lots o' text that clearly demonstrates something I'm willing to concede sounds like reality; & / or (c) an interest checklist that used more than the 3 BDSM categories; & / or (d) has journal entries that meet the same criteria as (b); & / or (e) their profile is attached to paddles or insane stamps or condemned notices on the message boards & the others with paddles or insane stamps or condemned notices treat that profile holder as being a real entity . . ... Tentatively. Awaiting further confirmation. Not guaranteed. No rebates or refunds. Your mileage may vary, & these are not representative results . .. . But enough of that silliness . .. . .

Status: offline 		My profile is pretty empty because I'm only here for the forums.
If I were looking, I would probably boil it down to what I was looking for BDSMwise into a sentence or two. Something like "sub, into bondage, not s & m, not tpe". And then use the following paragraphs to talk about me as a person and traits I needed in a partner, as well as those I couldn't put up with.

I only read the ones that come up and profiles of people who write stuff that attracts my attention.

Status: offline 		I tinker with my profile endlessly!  A lot of the time I am motivated by some wack email that asks something that I never thought of.  My personal situation changes, I look for different things at different times, I change the words around...  it's fun!  What is even MORE fun is evidence that folks are READING the dang thing!

Status: offline 		I looked around a lot of other profiles before even attempting to write my own text. Even now, I'm not 100% happy with it, but it says enough...just an introduction, really, so anyone who tries to contact me at least has the basics. Really I'm only here for the forums, so it doesn't matter to me as much as it could, were I looking.

I don't have much use for the journal.

I look at profiles as the person takes my interest. A reply on a thread, a mention of something written in a profile, finding out more about someone I see in the chatrooms...or somebody who grabs my interest on the homepage - whether it's an interesting pic, good opening line, attention grabbing profile text, etc etc...

It's all pretty random, really...

Status: offline 		At first, I was a bit afraid of being the new guy, so I just browsed around a bit, and my profile was fairly empty. I changed my profile a few times, and I am fairly happy with how mine turned out now. It's by no means a complete overview of me, but if someone wanted to know more about me, all they would have to do is ask. I feel that if someone was intrigued enough by my profile, I'm an easy guy to chat with, and will gladly do so. I might change my profile again, I might not, but it changes as it needs to. And right now it's what I feel it needs to be.

As for the full profiles, I view full profiles of those that attract my attention on the forums, and I perv people back if they view me. If someone views my full profile, I like to return the favor and see what makes them tick. There are many interesting people here, and some are interesting enough for me to cmail and instant message with. Local people who view me, I like to cmail soon, seeing is that they are local and maybe we could teach each other something new someday. People at distance I also converse with, as I don't mind travel when money and time permit. But I like to have fun, and try not to take myself too seriously.

Knowledgeable friends are my main focus here, potential partners too, if things come to that. I say in my profile that nothing is set in stone, people change, I change, situations change, so I will always try to remain as open minded as possible, and change with the situation. But yes, I love viewing full profiles of interesting people, especially when they take the time to write a full profile with included interests, because if nothing else, maybe I found someone who might enjoy talking about a specific genre of movie or music.

Status: offline 		I am pretty random.  Like LadyH, I will change mine if someone has something to say that motivates me to add or delete something, give a new specific thought, or whatever.  I will view people that come up on the main search page if they look interesting or have a line written that piques my interest.  I also will view profiles of people I see posting over here on the boards, just because there is alot of interesting information and people over here.

Status: offline 		Ahhh, constructing a profile...I wish I could just be happy with what I've written but I'm a gemini and, as such, find it difficult to pin myself to one thing all the time.  Maybe that explains the switch label...hmmm

I've written and re-written my profile many times.  I'm fairly specific about my "ultimate goal" so I always include that. Everything else can change as quickly as my mind...which is pretty often.  I just did a rewrite and I'm not 100% pleased with it so, back to the drawing board.
I tend to be one of those people that others complain about when they mention long and rambling profiles. The one I have now is short, for me.
I LOVE the journals!  I haven't written in a while but I do like when I get the rare email from someone commenting on one of my entries. 

Other people's profiles...I have to admit, I feel a "perving moment" about to come on.  I like to read profiles, the more in depth the better.  I like when someone takes the time to explain who they are and can give me a glimpse of what's going on in their noodle, if only briefly.  I get bored with strictly kink profiles and journals that are nothing but poorly written kink or copied song lyrics.  Poems are nice, I have a few, and if I really like the entry I will email the person just to comment or compliment.  I did this the other day, though, and the guy wrote back a rather rude email about how I wasn't his type and why was I reading journal entries from a year ago.  Sheesh, some people just can't take a compliment!

As for the "beginner/expert" ratings...I only have that tick on one, maybe two things. Cracks me up when you see a profile that lists "expert" on pretty much everything.  The things I'm an expert at aren't offered on the lists.

It's just a part of  being here on the boards so mine is a bare bones, extremely basic profile now for several reasons. 1 - I'm not looking for a partner (not that I was in the first place) since I met Lumus here. 2 - I'm strictly here for the forums and friends. 3 - I'm tired of a few whackos that take basic information and assuming that that means I'm desperately looking for a Master since I'm over 40 and female.

No, though it did remind me of the great diversity available in this lifestyle.

Pictures, pictures, pictures. For both liking and disliking. I love seeing real people in everyday situations but OMG, do I have to see yet another crotch shot or ass shot? (Unless it's a really hot ass like Lumus'!) Oh - and the obviously ripped from the webz "model" shots. C'mon, there are some damned good looking people here but there's a limit to my gullibility.

No, because the only person who's opinion matters to me is Lumus - He is my Love and my Life, Daddy, Master and Husband. (Ya, it's been a year but still sickeningly in love with Him. Deal.) *chuckles*

Rarely look at full profiles except for the occasional poster on the forums that catches my interest. Could be for something profound they wrote, or sheer stupidity. Or they garbled something soooooo badly that I have to see if they're from Jupiter and don't speak any known human language.Though on a side note, Lumus and I used to play what we called "The Home Game" where you just keep clicking on "Home" and seeing what comes up. Can be pretty funny at times....

Look at main picture then skim text. Extremely rarely do I look at interests because since I'm here for the forums, I actually *GASP* talk with my friends and find out firsthand what their interests are.
