I live in the sticks. My telephone service is provided by a small locally owned company. DSL is NOT available to me unless I go to satalite dish for TV and that's darned expensive plus there is no local programming. As interesting as it is to live in New York City, I'm just not interested in their newscasts. I got prompted by Yahoo IM to download some new "highly recommended" security feature and I did it. Now my computer is slower than it was before which I didn't think was possible. It takes a couple of solitaire games for it to go from one web page to another. This may be coincidence only, but my modem keeps hanging up. Not just once or twice in a day. A half a dozen times in an hour. I've dialed back in 4 times since I started reading the message boards. If y'all have any suggestions other than taking the computer out in the back yard and shooting it, I'm listening.

Uninstall yahoo and see if that helps.

If it does then reinstall it with the custom option and don't add all the extra stuff they want you to. You might also want to try running Adaware6 and see if that will clear out the garbage.

If you have further trouble after doing a reinstall email me and I will try and find the link to the older versions of yahoo for you to download.

Hello dixiedumpling,

I am not sure the Yahoo security feature would cause your symptoms, but the things I would recommend initially are...

1) When was the last time you defragmented your hard drive?

2) Do you have an internet clean-up program and run it regularly? I have a few, including McAfee Internet Cleaner, Internet Washer, and a Windoze internet clutter software program I bought years ago. The joy of this last program is it allows me to go cull spyware from my registry.

3) Do you have a program which sniffs out and removes spyware and adware?

4) Is your paging file defined or do you let the operating system manage the size?

5) If none of these things help much, add more (RAM) memory. Or do that regardless.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like your modem is timing out. If you can find a setting for timeout value make it larger.

But I think the problem is your system is cluttered with stuff which makes it respond too slowly for your modem, so do that other stuff first.

Another thing you might look into is changing your start menu. When you boot up your system, your computer opens tons of programs that you don't run on a regular basis. i will do some research and get back with you on how to change it in case you don't know how.

To change your start up menu you click on start then click run- in that box you type msconfig and hit ok/enter.

That will bring you to the system configuration menu. You will click on the far right tab that says >startup< uncheck the items you do not want to run from boot- click apply and reboot.

In addition to what the others said a regular "disk cleanup" helps. I do it every day. If you don't know how go to start, then programs, then accessories, then system tools, then disk cleanup. It also helps to clean out cookies regularly.

I've never heard of an Internet Clean-Up Program. I would get this where? I occasionally run the defragment program, probably not often enough. I have the free version of AdAware and I run it about once a week. My computer knowledge is pretty much restricted to turning it on and off. Tell me about "paging file defined". I haven't a clue what that means.

Sinergy, I bet You're in Mensa.

You may want to try spybot search and destroy as well. You can go to www.google.com and search for free programs to kill malware/spyware.

One of my favorite sites for computer things is www.wilders.org good progs there as well.

For older yahoo versions go to www.freecreed.com there you will go to yahoo pages and you will find all the previous messenger versions. So you can download a prior version that you or your computer liked better. Just don't run the updates when it asks you or you will end up with the most recent version again. If that was in fact an issue.

What OS are you using?

Have you cleaned your temp files lately?

Go to your run command and put in c:\windows\prefetch

pull that up and delete everything in there except the layout file. Its just a garbage file that windows uses to guess what you are going to do trying to give it a faster feel deleting this will sometimes speed you up.

If your running Windows XP download security patches there not from Yahoo. Also if you have Xp go to www.blackviper.com Hes got a great section on how to get the garbage that you dont need and or use off your system without disrupting the whole thing.

DONT DO IT!!!!!!

Don't touch your start menu use this command instead if you screw up your start menu you can really foul things up beyond repair use this command instead

services.msc that way if you can only disable non essential parts of your system.

You shouldnt be using that menu unless you know what your doing. I fix at least 10 computers a day that people have screwed something up on their msconfig menu.
