I heard about it in the AFP, so all of you who think that is a fascist rag can move along, nothing to see here.

Now those who know me know I don't have a sweet tooth. I prefer real teeth. Mine have a few dents and nicks from opening beer bottles and loosening lugnuts, things of that nature. Like I chipped one biting a key to my house in half, it was quite the illustration to one who was being thrown out. However alot of people just have to use sweeteners, and I think it is killing them.

Which brings us to the point. Consider these words carefully - "banned it in the early 1990s unless labeled as a supplement". Now think backwards people, or put more aptly, in reverse. What possible motivation could they have for doing that ? (ever hear of enriched bread ?)

Now, for a change I am going to leave this in the form of that question. Draw your own conclusions, I want to hear it in your own words, not mine. I already know what my words are and many of them are not to be used among the old or children if ya know whadd I mean.

Just as tertiary info for those unaware, nineteen years of aspartame has not been very good. When you test it, there are no toxins, however once ingested it becomes toxic. It becomes a form of alcohol and subsequently an acid in the body IIRC. Very nasty shit, and they have had this alternative for over nineteen years !

Just who the fuck are they working for ?

I'm just taking a stab in the dark here.  I'm guessing it was banned because since it is a natural sweetener (an herb), the FDA stepped in and did that.  (Just my guess here).  Stevia is species of the sunflower family.  It may be labeled as a supplement now though, because you can buy it in the grocery stores.  Its called Truvia (in the grocery stores, that is).  I've known about stevia for a while now.  But one, didn't know how to use it because it is so potently sweet, and two (while never put a real effort into it), never saw it for purchase in stores.

And it does prompt the question: is the FDA approoving it because there is now a way for big business to make a profit?

I would think (and I'm cynical about the FDA), FDA is approving it because they're getting something out of allowing it to be produced.  At the risk of being blasted by FDA defenders here, the FDA bans alot of supplements that pharmaceutical companies pay them not to approve so the public will be forced to take their drugs.  It's my guess they got some kind of gain from stevia.

Stevia had some studies showing it caused genetic damage. That's not some manipulation by the FDA or big pharma.

More studies have showed stevia is a very weak mutagen if it is one at all. FDA is approving it based on it posing very little threat to human health. For comparison it appears to be slightly more mutagenic than saccharine.

BTW the whole supplements are unfairly regulated claim is disproven. The people who make supplements while touting their health benefits without any real science behind the claims are responsible for the deaths and illness of hundreds if not thousands of people in the US each year and are literally killing millions of people every year in Africa.

If this gets banned as a sweetener in the US it will most likely be corn producers who will lobby to have it blocked. High fructose corn syrup is a multi-billion dollar industry and is used in a massive number of products. Although, on the proponent side of the issue, could possibly be the soft drink industry (which is presently one of the largest users of corn syrup), if stevia proves to be lower cost than corn syrup. On that premise soft drink makers would be able to increase their bottom line profits, thus pushing them in favor of it.

It was banned because too many people want a nanny state.  Period.  If you have a nanny state, it acts like a nanny when you want it to, but also when you don't want it to.

A lot of us are praising the nanny state for trying to ban evil trans fats (thanks, Mayor Bloomberg) but then we'll scream like stuck pigs when it tries to ban something we happen to like. 

Freedom.  It's all or nothing.

i have diabetes, and even before being diagnosed, i have been using Stevia now for about 3 years.  i find it a much better alternative than saccharin or Equal (both chemicals!!) to sweeten my coffee (only 3 or 4 drops taste sweeter than a whole teaspoon of suger).  And blood sugar is well within limits (either fasting or 2 hour)..,.So, 2 points here....from my perspective,  no ill effects on blood glucose; AND it is cost effective
Anyway, this is my opinion (and experience)
BTW where i live, Stevia can be found only in a health food store, not in grocery stores.

i have a question and hope someone has an answer.....on here, under my name (Oldmansmisty),  it says "Vanilla".  Is there any way i can change that to something else?....even "Newbie" would be better....One thing i am NOT is vanilla...lol

You should be able to find Stevia based sweeteners at your local grocery store now.
Look for Truvia.
However, Stevia extract is still classified as a "dietary supplement".

As for the vanilla cone it just means you are new here, keep on posting for a change in status.

Ohhh...well, i have been told that Stevia is an herb (that is not a chemical)[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m21.gif[/image]There is a plant called SweetLeaf ...variety: Stevia Rebaudiana. Quote from a catalog i have..."The mint-like leaves of this plant contain 10 times more natural sweetening power than sugar and it is the sweetest way known to mankind for satisfying a sweet tooth.  The natural sweeting agent is contained in the edible leaves and stems"
You can nibble on a leaf for a non-fattening sweet taste treat....and the leaves may be stored and dried to be used in  drinks or foods that need sweetening. i have one of these plants on order (also makes a decorative house plant)

I doubt I will use it either way.  Sugar- honey, Cinnamon, chocolate, works for me.

Just light on HFCS, refined,processed,bleached, MSG, nutrasweet.
