We have a little bit of stocktaking to do. "Lues" (pronounced LOO-weez) does not quite mean "plague." I believe it could, in theory, refer to any infestation, but in practice it was commonly used for what we call "syphilis." It's a very rare term now, but you find it a lot in the old sexological literature.

I've looked up "busk" in OED and found what has to be the definition that Hohoho was looking for:

quote:

A strip of wood, whalebone, steel, or other rigid material passed down the front of a corset, and used to stiffen and support it.

I had no idea.

OK, next word...genuflect

"Evanescent" means fleeting; it refers to something that doesn't last forever. I assume "evanesce" is the verb.

Next word...well, how about a set of four?

minaret, minuet, martinet, lazaret

Well...Minuet is a dance for couples from the 17th century, also used as a description for the music that it's danced to.

A lazaret is a place for quarantine or a hospital that treats contagious diseases.

A martinet is someone very rigid in rules and protocol.

I will have to look up the other one to see if there's a correllation between them when the 4 are used together, otherwise I'm confused as to why you called them a set. Unless you are grouping them because of their shared "et" ending.

Yes, it's just because they all end in "-et." I guess I could have added "tete-a-tete," "duet," and "barrette."

Pink, it's DE MINIMIS, not de minimus.

That's a complete change, usually implying a change from something good into something fundamentally different and less appealing.

We still haven't done "minaret."

That's not the definition of "minaret."

It's "de minimis" (ablative plural) not "de minimus" (which would be ungrammatical in Latin).
