"Attempt" is definitely one meaning of "assay."  It's from French, and means "test, try, probe, attempt."

"Disingenuous" doesn't quite mean "withholding information."  It can include that, but basically means "giving a false appearance of frankness."

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/7/2006 9:15:09 PM)

Heh, good one.  "Antidisestablishmentarianism" means "the belief opposing the disestablishment of the Church of England," which itself means "the belief opposing the cessation of government support for the church."

I suppose you could say W & Co. are "neo-antidisestablishmentarians."

Oh, next one..."descry"

I stand corrected. I had to ask Chris and he said that while it can apply to lab testing, the more general use is that of attempt.

New word:

xanthoderm

MsPoetress -> RE: Word Fight (4/9/2006 1:44:08 PM)

xanthoderm: A white like fungus that can be cause by picking daisies

Fangot

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/9/2006 1:55:16 PM)

That doesn't sound right.  It must have something to do with yellow skin.  "Xanthos" means "yellow."

You are correct. It means 'yellow skinned' , referring one's nationality and not juandice.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/9/2006 2:01:33 PM)

Hmmm, so it's an elegant racial slur?

Oh, no one did "fangot" yet.  I had to look it up.  Believe it or not, it's related to "faggot."

LOL only if one decides to take it in such a way. Personally, I have always thought that those who were using it were just trying to be 'politically correct' in their speaking.

Edited to add:

Ok, I looked it up for the exact definition and this is what is listed

quote:

xanthoderm : A yellow-skinned person, or a lutescent (yellowish) individual whose race is Oriental. This is not a euphonious word, but then (not to be too jaundiced) neither are some for people whose hue is black (a melano or melanoderm), white (a leucoderm) or red (the aithochroi). Caucasians who have pale skin and dark hair are melanochroi.

rivenmoon -> RE: Word Fight (4/10/2006 6:34:09 AM)

whats the next word?

MATTOCK

mnottertail -> RE: Word Fight (4/10/2006 7:40:46 AM)

a mattock is  commonly called a grub hoe, I own several. It is a pick-axe like thing with (generally a flat blade for scraping and the other side has a blade that is dull but axe like.

But I thought we were talking about burning brands, am I mistaken?

nice attempt at misleading here [:)]

fangot - a bundle or quantity of something to be sold -- and as a measurement related to faggot as in a measure of wood

new word - eruction ( and no that is not a misspelled erection )

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/10/2006 10:46:52 AM)

Is that when you burp and it smells like rotten meat?  Or is that eructation?  I forget.

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/10/2006 11:06:53 AM)

You are correct. Eruction is  burp :)
