"Xebec"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/18/2006 8:56:00 PM)

"Adust" means scorched, burned to a crisp.  Not sunburned.

I had no idea what "xebec" means, so I looked it up.  Laugh.  That's a great Scrabble word.

Isn't it? I was watching some show on television when they mentioned Xebec lol. I had to go look it up, I had never heard it before. It's a fun word though [:)]

Your turn [:D]

AngelaK -> RE: Word Fight (4/19/2006 9:31:04 AM)

But what's xebec?

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/19/2006 10:17:57 AM)

It's a kind of boat, and the word comes from Arabic via Catalan.

Next one..."deracinated"

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/19/2006 10:31:12 AM)

quote:

..."deracinated"

Removing from it's natural environment; sort of like what we did with the slaves when they were brought from Africa to here.

"Zakuski"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/19/2006 1:06:37 PM)

No idea.  That looks like a proper name.

Edited to add: I looked it up.  Not a proper name.  Wow, where are you getting these words???  I wonder how many people know what "zakuski" means.

"Deracinated" means literally "uprooted."

LOL believe it or not, I actually come across these words either on television, or from reading. I am both blessed and cursed with a memory that does not let go of something once I latch on.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/19/2006 8:09:51 PM)

"vermiculation"

Tikkiee -> RE: Word Fight (4/20/2006 4:53:36 AM)

"vermiculation

The movement of the intestines as they contract

"Orihon"

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/20/2006 9:20:40 AM)

That's right.  I think the more commonly used sense is "worm-eaten," as in "a vermiculated corpse."

"Orihon" means folded book (like a Hallmark card)--but it's a Japanese word.  Oh, I see that it's in OED, so I guess it counts.

Next one..."chrestomathy"

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/20/2006 9:24:15 AM)

Anthology

Lordandmaster -> RE: Word Fight (4/20/2006 9:36:46 AM)

They're nearly synonyms, but usually a chrestomathy refers to a collection of excerpts, and an anthology to a collection of whole works.  (The etymologies are interesting too: a "chrestomathy" contains things that are useful for learning; an "anthology" is a gathering of things, like a bouquet of flowers.)

Your turn, bandit.

bandit25 -> RE: Word Fight (4/20/2006 9:48:22 AM)

My turn, huh?  Ok...hmmmm...how about abderian?

mnottertail -> RE: Word Fight (4/20/2006 10:21:04 AM)

Oh, I am sorry Ron [:)]

Zakuski's are hors d'oeuvres; specifically Russian hors d'oeuvres
