Nonplussed

Nonplussed = Perplexed, at a loss for words

I asked for a reason: I stumbled across an entry in the New Oxford American Thesaurus, and it gave the standard definition and went on to say that in American, we were starting to misuse the word with the opposite meaning, because Americans thought the 'non-' prefix somehow changed the meaning.

I was incensed, because I had never heard this meaning before, nor has anyone else I've asked.

My mother used to use that word a lot: 'They just like to gad about town.'
