I don't think people remember it that way.  I know I don't.  Reagan seemed sharp and coherent long after he left the White House.

This idea that age should be a limiting factor I find a little ridiculous.

Many people have achieved their greatest accomplishments in their 70's, 80's, and even 90's.

While we readily accept the contributions of members of Congress and the Supreme Court who are at advanced ages, we somehow believe a person in his early 70's is too old to handle the Presidency?

Maybe so, but once the Alzheimer's news came out, it affected all future elections.

But we don't elect them at that age.  They may well remain in office long enough to reach that age (especially in the case of the Court), but rarely do we elect a 70-year-old to Congress for his/her first term.

Plus the Presidency is seen as a special case.  The pressure is far greater, as is the job responsibility, since it's just one person.

Isn't this just another version of the "executive experience" theory you and I both argued against?

I don't recall making that argument.  Must be advanced age. [:)]

In any event, it's obvious to anyone that Presidential candidates get far more attention and scrutiny by the general public than do Congressional or Judicial ones.  And with good reason.

It's as if you're claiming that the president is racist.

Yeah, they'd be pissed, but Obama's not about to appoint another old white guy to the Court.

kittinSol -> RE: Supreme Court Justice Souter to retire (5/2/2009 5:52:38 PM)

I bloody well hope that a Woman is appointed.

It's as if you have complete ignorance of the current makeup of the Court.

Count on it, Kit. I don't see any way he appoints a man. Definitely a woman, most likely Hispanic... although I'm still holding out for Janeane Garofalo.

You're kidding right? He definitely was showing signs of Alzheimers during his second term. He was basically a recluse within a year of leaving office.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Supreme Court Justice Souter to retire (5/2/2009 11:23:30 PM)

When did Reagan not sound like a blithering idiot? The man was an inexhaustible fountain of inane, nonsensical babbling from the moment he first ran for the Presidency. From his assertion that ballistic missiles could be "recalled" if fired in error, to his claiming on at least two separate occasions that he had personally assisted in the liberation of Nazi death camps when - in fact - he had spent the entire war making training films (at least one of which was about liberating death camps), and never seen combat, the man never sounded like anything but an Alzheimer's patient to me.

When Ronnie announced that the nuclear bombers were on their way to Russia, the soviets went on high alert and started mobilizing.

For a joke,Ronnie almost caused a nuclear disaster and WW III.

He was blithering idiot. But when you rap yourself in the flag and strut, even a pee-on like bush can look formidable.Especially with a flock of fawning sheople around them pretending they`re competent.

Well, maybe my memory is faulty, and I have to admit not following politics very closely at that point in my life, but I seem to remember him making public appearances and speeches long after he left office.

How about William Jefferson Clinton.  If Obama wants to piss off neo conservatives forever, it should be Bill.

I doubt it would piss them off at all. Clinton helped their cause as much as anyone. Bank deregulation. NAFTA. Welfare Reform. Habeas Reform.  Etc. Etc.

popeye1250 -> RE: Supreme Court Justice Souter to retire (5/3/2009 1:46:47 PM)

Yeah, get the earplugs, we'll be hearing the phrase "brilliant legal scholor" ad nausium.
Is there a lawyer or judge out there who (isn't) a "brilliant legal scholor?"
I hope he picks someone who's "competant" that'd be enough for me.

I don't think that would be possable, I believe upon being impeached by the House he was disqualified from the S.C.
Yeah, Clinton surely was a conservative's dream though with all that stuff!

Sure, he could read from a teleprompter right up until the point where he couldn't read anymore. But left on his own, to speak off the cuff.... he was a press secretary's nightmare, throughout his entire presidency.

Reagan? "The Great Communicator"?

The guy who won in landslide elections???

You're kidding, right? [sm=biggrin.gif]

It seems more like you're deriding Obama, you appear to be describing current TOTUS, er, POTUS.

I've seen Obama speak extemporaneously numerous times, and while he is nowhere near as polished, he still communicates clearly and I come away from the experience understanding what he was saying. Even if I don't like it or agree with it. His intelligence is obvious every time he speaks.

I also saw Reagan speak extemporaneously more times than I can count, and he invariably left me with the impression that he was at best a willfully ignorant ideologue, and at worst dangerously retarded. The only times he ever came across as anything less than a babbling moron was when he was reading directly from a teleprompter, as when giving a speech, or in a scripted and rehearsed performance such as a "debate" (or what passes for  Presidential debate in this country). Any time he was thrown the least bit off the track of his script, he would stand there with a vacant grin, blinking stupidly like a rabbit about to get run over by a truck. If he didn't have it memorized and rehearsed, or couldn't read it off a card or a teleprompter, he had absolutely no clue what to say. I honestly thought he had at least the beginning stages of Alzheimer's the entire time he was in office.

Why stop there?

Why not just go all the way, and claim that Ronald Reagan did not exist... that he's a non-person.

Hilarious...

I assume that's your way of saying you disagree. As incomprehensible and illogical as it is, it does at least provide a fascinating insight into why you found Reagan to be eloquent.
