ORIGINAL: ThatDamnedPanda Sure, he could read from a teleprompter right up until the point where he couldn't read anymore. But left on his own, to speak off the cuff.... he was a press secretary's nightmare, throughout his entire presidency. I've seen Obama speak extemporaneously numerous times, and while he is nowhere near as polished, he still communicates clearly and I come away from the experience understanding what he was saying. Even if I don't like it or agree with it. His intelligence is obvious every time he speaks. I also saw Reagan speak extemporaneously more times than I can count, and he invariably left me with the impression that he was at best a willfully ignorant ideologue, and at worst dangerously retarded. The only times he ever came across as anything less than a babbling moron was when he was reading directly from a teleprompter, as when giving a speech, or in a scripted and rehearsed performance such as a "debate" (or what passes for Presidential debate in this country). Any time he was thrown the least bit off the track of his script, he would stand there with a vacant grin, blinking stupidly like a rabbit about to get run over by a truck. If he didn't have it memorized and rehearsed, or couldn't read it off a card or a teleprompter, he had absolutely no clue what to say. I honestly thought he had at least the beginning stages of Alzheimer's the entire time he was in office.
