I don't think people remember it that way. I know I don't. Reagan seemed sharp and coherent long after he left the White House. This idea that age should be a limiting factor I find a little ridiculous. Many people have achieved their greatest accomplishments in their 70's, 80's, and even 90's. While we readily accept the contributions of members of Congress and the Supreme Court who are at advanced ages, we somehow believe a person in his early 70's is too old to handle the Presidency?

They may well remain in office long enough to reach that age (especially in the case of the Court), but rarely do we elect a 70-year-old to Congress for his/her first term. Plus the Presidency is seen as a special case. The pressure is far greater, as is the job responsibility, since it's just one person.

When did Reagan not sound like a blithering idiot? The man was an inexhaustible fountain of inane, nonsensical babbling from the moment he first ran for the Presidency. From his assertion that ballistic missiles could be "recalled" if fired in error, to his claiming on at least two separate occasions that he had personally assisted in the liberation of Nazi death camps when - in fact - he had spent the entire war making training films (at least one of which was about liberating death camps), and never seen combat, the man never sounded like anything but an Alzheimer's patient to me.

I've seen Obama speak extemporaneously numerous times, and while he is nowhere near as polished, he still communicates clearly and I come away from the experience understanding what he was saying. Even if I don't like it or agree with it. His intelligence is obvious every time he speaks. I also saw Reagan speak extemporaneously more times than I can count, and he invariably left me with the impression that he was at best a willfully ignorant ideologue, and at worst dangerously retarded. The only times he ever came across as anything less than a babbling moron was when he was reading directly from a teleprompter, as when giving a speech, or in a scripted and rehearsed performance such as a "debate" (or what passes for Presidential debate in this country). Any time he was thrown the least bit off the track of his script, he would stand there with a vacant grin, blinking stupidly like a rabbit about to get run over by a truck. If he didn't have it memorized and rehearsed, or couldn't read it off a card or a teleprompter, he had absolutely no clue what to say. I honestly thought he had at least the beginning stages of Alzheimer's the entire time he was in office.
