Thsi is just a ramble taht I wandered into while writing the Draciron's cross topic. It really had no relation to the concept of axis but it does contain lots of fodder for convo. It is also flame bait but whats life without an occasional flaming :)

Peerage is a word that could have a number of meanings. The ritualistic nature of BDSM tends to lend itself to hierarchal growth. The comunity itself has not really warmed to any kind of ranking system, while many actually crave such a ranking system which would be nearly impossible for such a subjective realm. Do you rate a Master and sub on some sort of show much like a dog show? Can the subbie do certain formalized positions rated on execution and form? Another would be if a Master was influential upon other Masters for example. Perhaps a balloting section. Ratings on writings perhaps. Or perhaps local flogging contests rated by the flogged leading to national championships? A BDSM rodeo does have a great deal of appeal. Ranking be damned I've often fantasized about chasing down a sub and tieing her up like a calf roping contest. I haven't been to a rodeo or worn a Cowboy hat since I was 8 years old. Nor do I listen to CW music. Cart races for pony slaves. BDSM encompasses far too much for general ranking to be possible. The above examples should make this fairly clear. Still there is a strong mystical element to BDSM and the dream of an Arch Master is a strong one for many subs. Others believe their own Master to be an Arch Master and better than the poor subbie next to them's Master. This is a healthy assumption because for that subbie most likely their Master IS the right Master for them.

What is realistic is that there are the occasional land mark events in BDSM. Marques De Sade was probably the first well known such. While the writings are not remotely typical of of modern consensual BDSM, De Sade did almost invent the genre and was a strong influencer on writers like Norman who followed. Even the idea of a secret society of gentle men was integrated by
Pauline Reage in her landmark book The story of O. Norman's Gor series was another landmark literary event. It even Lent it's name to a sub culture of BDSM as well as having widespread influence on BDSM as a whole. So these people have become Elite members of the BDSM history for contributions. Another I think who did more to define and codify modern BDSM practice was
Molly Devon who seemed to be the primary author of Screw the Roses, send me the thorns. Co-author Philip Miller is another BDSM luminary. Betty Page is another example being one of the first and best well known BDSM model.

Beyond the stars and innovators comes the organizers and shakers. What Dom would not love to be the Dom of Dom's? By nature Dom's are not really followers so Dom of Dom's is neither easy to obtain or maintain and rarely if ever happens. Still the myth persists and sometimes Dom's will attempt to perpetuate it or live it. What does happen is through contributions to the comunity some come to be influential on the community or sub comunities. Such influence can be fleeting or even turn into notoriety as happened to the maintainer of a well known BDSM forum a few years back. Controversy and the Dom's own words undid him and ravaged a subculture built by many over a period of years.

In every walk of life, I think that most everyone would want to leave a lasting mark that would have them remembered and in some cases revered long after they are gone. Unfortunately, life is so fleeting, such that most everyone wants to lend their influence on others and help change the lives of others. Or so it has been my experience, Dom, sub, Switch or not. Just a part of human existence is a desire to be remembered and appreciated.

I'd go along with that, and yet I give my peers the same respect as I do my brother peers I another area of my life, my peers in Lodge, or my Gorean peers.

Peerage...to mean means peer of the relam - meaning royalty or near royalty (knights). On the topic of your rodeo or competion. I would love it...send me an invitation if you decide to start one <grin>.

G'day Cloudz,

I'm back just not as much as I'd like but am usig a friend's computer who lives with us untill I rebuild our two and get them on line.

Your right on target regarding Peerage, which is why so many relete to it if they are into Medieval groups. Peers are a tad different and represent the people you mix with who you respect and can turn to for advise. I tend to be able to cover it from all angles being a smarter than average Bear y'know Now where's the picnic basket Huh huh ??????

When I saw the word peerage, I was thinking something totally different. Shows where my mind is. But, seriously, yeah, to all you said, but there is nothing that would work in a formal way. The concept reminds me of the thread that spoke of keeping a list that would kind of rate Doms and subs. Who determines who gets what rating and how, etc. ? All you can do is build your reputation with friends and by posting on boards such as this to reach a wider audience.

But you know it comes down to what do you really want. Do you want a superficial reputation or title that may have little correlation to how you actually get along with and are viewd by others? I'm not saying a reputation as King Dom necessarily precludes one from being a privately well thought of person and Dom either. I'm just saying why does it matter if you are already well thought of in your group. It is unlikely you are going to meet the others for any significant dealings anyway.
