I have this great morning sun kitchen window, I want to raise African violets again--what kind of shelf(ves) should I put up?

My window is divided into two halves and there is a space of 3 inches of wall on each side before the cabinets start.

( No the sills are large enough to do this).

Honestly, I'd have to see your window to answer that question.

You could use hooks and hang a few pots.

ok....if you wanna make it look really nice it can get a little pricey or can you keep it relatively cheap, but here is my suggestions:

First, find a shelf standard similar to this one at a local hardware store. I will recommend a length between 18"-36".  You will need 4 of them. Also enough matching clips for each shelf you desire (4 per shelf).

Then you or someone with modest carpentry skills surface mount two on each cabinet side opposite the window. They must be level to each other in all directions. Space them as far apart on each cabinet as the width of each shelf minus about one or two inches (I would recommend 5"-6" wide shelves), though you can go wider (I would not go narrower) if you prefer

For the shelves: because of the width this is where it can be pricey. For the deluxe look, 1/2" thick plate glass with polished or sanded edges. If you want to go cheaper select hardwood planks your choice of species in a size (lumber terms) 1"x6"x48" (48" or whatever length you actually need minus 1/8"). The solid lumber will need to be sealed with an acrylic lacquer or similar. Cheaper still you can go with pine and paint it white or whatever color you like.

hope this helps

keep the pots small. because it's in the sink area with a window - there will always be temperature fluctuations and higher humidity. i'd suggest running 1/4' glass on top of your existing sill. no more than 6" wide - you need to keep it out of the way of your faucet. very easy to keep clean - a very spare look, and easily replaceable if it breaks. keep in mind - no matter what kind of finish you put on a wood shelf.... the water will damage it.

my grandmother is an african violet genius.....she even roots the leaves

she has plain wood shelves, hanging on chains hung from the ceiling.....wrapped the chain around each board, then tacked it in place....3 shelves, 6 foot long, hanging in front of one huge bay window....just scale it down and voila......

chain, boards, anchor bolts for ceiling (or cabinets)....cheap and gorgeous

How low does the window go?  Is there space underneath it?
Take a visit to a garden center or nursery to get some ideas and find out how much sun and shade the African violets will need.  Consider how much sunlight comes through the window and whether or not the leaves will burn.
