Yeah, i didn't care for the movie itself either. Had a few bright spots (Mickey Rooney's character was a hoot, and Dick van Dyke is the consummate comedic pro even at 163 or whatever), but the story line was weak and I don't care much for Ben Stiller. He's damned good, but the way he plays his roles always makes me feel very uncomfortable watching him. It's like he's showing me too much of his vulnerability, and I feel like a voyeur. Which is a pretentious, pseudo-intellectual way of saying he usually creeps me out. What I liked about Owen Wilson in both of these films was that along with his abrasive, fratboy schtick, he seems to have found a way to work in a natural, easygoing appeal that I really enjoy watching. Doesn't make him any less smarmy, but takes the edge off of it and makes him seem like less of a self-absorbed prick. Maybe the thing that makes it work so well with me is precisely the fact that I expected to hate him, and the likability sort of snuck up and blindsided me. The sneaky little bastard.
