[:D]  You just wanted free squick-porn, Kittin. I dunno, I think he should have the right to do it but yanno - I think I might pass on this if it ever came this way.

(So says the weirdo who worked on an ambulance for years and saw many a weird and gross sight....)

Quiet, you. I asked purely out of scientific interest.

In Las Veges there is an exhibit 'BODIES' where in the cadaviers are on display, 'artfully done'.

Where else but in Germany...hey, didn't those guys make lampshades out of tattooed people, skinning them alive ? And some they made into soap, how about the hair slippers for the U Boat sailors And Dr.Mengela, didn't he try to change the colors of eyes, and did some strange things to twins....Ah yes, Germans.

MasterG2kTR -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/7/2009 6:05:58 PM)

That's like one step away from necrophilia.....just wrong on so many levels....[:'(]

Aileen1968 -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/7/2009 6:58:38 PM)

This falls into the category of "If you don't like it, don't look"
Mmmmm...cadavar lovin'

ienigma777 -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/7/2009 10:43:40 PM)

HelloMasterG2ktr; The 'show' Bodies has been a constant display for over 10 years. I suppose, it is a sucessful exhibit, having run so long. Well, at least the participants don't have a union so no strikes for better wages...hmmmm, they don't get paid at all, I'm guessing. So, it must be a cheaply produced exhibit, like most things in vegas. Since Vegas has a growing Jewish community, one of the largest in the country, so they brag, it must be a big hit.

Bizarre Magazine, an English publication, has some of the most 'Bizzarre' articles, a couple of years ago,they spotlighted a fashion designer, who, out of pigskin, fashioned some really macabe clothing. You wear the stuff like a second skin, sort of a leotard. It is so realistic 'human' membrains, veins, another skin. He has it complete with hood and purse, everything in 'human skin accessories'. It is so Ultra realistic. I think the designer is German.

Death has a certain attraction; stuff like this affords one the stimulus of experiencing death and mutilation without actually having to participate in the act itself.

Have you ever wondered why in the SM/DS genre participants often get off on domination by a person so attired in Nazi SS uniform garb? The image creates some hynotic mysterious sexual stimulus like no other. The high boots, the riding crop, the absolute authority the Nazi image protrays is overpowering to the senses and especially erotic.

FangsNfeet -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/7/2009 11:20:08 PM)

To my understanding, people donated their bodies to Dr Death for this form of art. If people are willing to have their bodies displayed like this and there is a fan base for these shows, then I can't object to this event.

If this guy is truely going to far, then let's just watch him go out of business as no one wishes to see such disturbing imagery.

~Fast Reply~

Hard to say... It kinda creeps me out yet not so long ago, dissection was considered terribly immoral and it was prefered that doctor's practice on living patients. I would be curious to see if medical students feel they are learning from this and how the artist feels this advances our knowledge. Really, I'm more disturbed by the piss cross than this.

Rainfire -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/8/2009 6:46:16 AM)

*shrugs*

It's not my thing but then a lot of things aren't. I can see a curiosity view in it but then I have something of a medical background. Art? I don't know about that but then I know my taste in art. I'm not too sure that the piss cross is art either. Or the "displays" of feces art and used tampons. I tend to prefer a good oil painting, maybe a landscape with butterflies or flowers in it. Or a tasteful nude of a living person. Boring but my taste... [;)]

UncleNasty -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/8/2009 8:36:45 AM)

I've seen lots of art that didn't fit my standards for "pleasant." I am entitled to my own tastes.

I consider the purpose of art to be that of evoking a response. Anything that is created within that broad parameter fits with my definition of art. There is always work out there I don't necessarily care for but it is still qualifies as art to me.

Uncle Nasty

Rainfire -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/8/2009 8:46:34 AM)

Hmmmmm, good point. But at the same time, I'd wonder if just evoking a response is enough to qualify something as "art". If a dog shits on the sidewalk and I step in it, well, that sure as hell evokes a response from me. Usually "*&^&%$^#@^!!!!!!"  Does that make dog poop on lawns and sidewalks art? No, just a mess. Maybe with the qualifier "something created for the express and exclusive purpose of provoking a response"? For me, art just IS -  there's no use for it other than viewing, hopefully with pleasure.

[:'(]  Heaven knows that I don't think a mess is art, even if it does evoke a response.  [:)]

ienigma777 -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/8/2009 8:47:22 AM)

Well then.....consider.... is there is a 'fan base' for execution. I'm sure there are alot of people who would like to see an actual hanging, or some other form of public execution, beheading, whatever. This does not legitimize the display. But, then again, Horror and 'Hack Em, Slash Em' films are rather successful; people want to see that stuff, so, I guess if there is an audience, then it's okay. Something is basically 'distrubing' about this logic. At one time, supposed christians being offered to lions, or human scarifice drew an audience....so, application of this logic, makes it A-Okay, acceptible....so why this thread, why the discussion.

'ART' or the words 'ART FORM' is an umbrella phrase used to describe any type of 'SHOCK' display. The 'Crufixion in the piss bottle' certainly drew a response, especially from Sen. Jesse Helms who campagined to eliminate the funding for the arts. Helms cited this piss/cross obsenity, using it to focus on the waste of money in the Arts funding program. To the artist...good going, blatant funded abusiveness labeled 'Art' lead to just another program down the drain, as it were.

It didn't take a whole hell of a lot of discipline or creativity to put a cross in a bottle of Piss and to qualify the display as 'ART'.

Com'on, 'Cadaviers Fucking'......

This Dr. Death, garnered notice through his 'SHOCK' display.

ienigma777 -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/8/2009 9:09:57 AM)

Hello Rainfire; to offer an opinion on 'evoking a response' and art solely for the purpose of viewing. Mostly, what we call nowadays 'ART' was basically a commercial venture. The Ad agencies of modern time, adding text to the visuals, and with the invention of the printing press were able to produce and distribute the created imagery to thousands, the same as we have now with the digital processes.

The catholic church utilized the 'Graphic Form' (what we now call 'ART'); to the iliterate masses, to evok an imagery selling the church agenda.

ART, through the ages, is a mirror of the society which it is created in. The OLd Masters, (ie. Dutch) showed Holland at a particular space in time. Vemier, utilizing his 'Camera Obsura' has shown 'ART at it's experimental elvolution. It has never been created for the sole purpose of pleasurable viewing, except, that it has degenerated to that, (sunflowers and typical Van Goughish stuff).

To get a quick lesson, see the movie 'The Girl with the Pearl Earing'....even the cinegraphic imagery, is used to show Vermier's perspectives. Nice entertaining film. One thing in the film, the maid is shown Vermier's Studio, therein are manikins attired in certain costumes, She is instructed, never to adjust or move anything in the studio. Why, well at a certain time of day, the light casts it's shadows upon the costumes, and so the painter can again accurately depict what he sees.

kittinSol -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/8/2009 9:16:43 AM)

Rain, if a dog shits on a lawn, it's an accident. If an artist places dog poo on a canvas, it's art, because there's an intent behind it.

To go back to the exhibited corpses, I think I'd manage to view them *drool*, but it's the intent behind the artist's artform that disturbs me a little more than the content of his art. There's a lot of morbid fascination there... for sure.

hlen5 -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/8/2009 9:38:19 AM)

I organized a trip for a Christian singles group to tour "Body Worlds" when it was in Chicago. The display was fascinating. Since then I've become uncomfortable with articles I have read about Dr. Hagen. Showing dead people (approximating) fucking is way beyond the pale for me.

RCdc -> RE: Weirdness and Art (5/8/2009 9:45:46 AM)

I do not find it disturbing or too far.  But then I enjoyed Emins bed (vicariously of course) and that's just a 'mess' to some people.
