Just got home from watching the movie. I loved it. Yes there were some things that as a tos and tng fan I was a little concerned about. And yes the whole time jumping thing has been a little played out but I thought the charactors were great. They nailed Bones and I loved Scotty lol.
I will be seeing it again this week with another buddy of mine who did not get to go today.

A series with this cast and Enterprise might do well. I do not know about the plot, though; as I said, I thought that the pseudoscience sucked. I would like more credible pseudoscience, less theatrics and more credible characterizations which also are not imitations of the old crew. Why imitate when one can do better?

I really enjoyed it. I was never an original series fan, more of a TNG, Voyageur, and Enterprise guy. But this movie was really good.

Not sure about a series, but they have a Sequel planned. and Sci..watch closely again..not so much a Time Jump ( though that is in there sorta, Spock and Nero do jump back in time but don't end up where they expected to) but a Step to the Left then a Jump to the Right into another Alternate Reality. One where things may develop differently,. as they already have begun to. Spock did attend the Vulcan Science Academy in the original time line..but that was the first major divergence and clue that this was an alternate  universe at least to those who were fans of the series from the get go.

The cast is signed for the next two movies at least. So far, no credible claim for a new TV series starring this cast has been announced. (It seems unlikely, in any case, since most of this cast are now "hot properties" for other films.)

Okay, back from my second viewing. If anything I liked it better the second time thru . . . . . .

Really liked how strong a character they made Uhura into . . . . .. Loved, loved, loved the casting. Everyone was really excellent, but especially the kid playing Kirk. To my mind he was far Kirkier than even Shatner ever coulda been, as blasphemous as that might be . . . .. .

& I really dug how they blew up & rewrote Kirk's background, it helped make him far more epic of a character . . . .. . & I still see all this alternate futures & universes & rewriting of history thing as being very much in the spirit of both TOS & the overall franchise . ...

DomKen, if you're still dipping into this thread, perhaps you'd be willing to amplify a little on your point from our earlier discussion in this thread . . . . . I'm thinking I don't clearly understand what your thinking is . . .

I guess the easiest way to make the point is to contrast this movie with Voyage Home. In Voyage Home some unstoppable alien shows up and is going to wipe out the Earth. So the crew simply time travels to save the whole planet. In the new movie Spock inexplicably accepts the complete annihilation of Vulcan, which does BTW mean the younger Spock is dead in a few years when he has no place to return to for his mating ritual.

Personally I've never been a fan of the darker toned fundamentally anti technology and progress science fiction that typifies most of what has come out since Gibson's Neuromancer. I read and watch science fiction to be uplifted not beaten down. It seems to me, and a lot of ST fans that I know, that since Roddenberry's death the franchise has taken on a darker tone which is not what I find appealing.

I believe they said there were something like 10,000,000 Vulcan's left in the Federation so I suspect that while he MAY have lost his Pon Farr Doll IF this Spock had one considering the youthful problems he had, he will be able to find another. Since he is half human there is a potential for him and Uhura to go further, and Romulans are an offshoot (cousin) blood line..allowing for intr a marraige As well, you can't forget DomKen that while Spock went through the tidal surges (so to speak) for Pon Far, the Kali-Fewas chosen and he had to fight instead of marrying thereby burning the hormonal excess out of his system. That may be made available to ANY Vulcan that lost their mate..instead of going through the ceremony..a Vulcan Fight Club.

Hmmm that could be fun...Half Naked Vulcans duking it out in the squared ring...

Move Over Uhura and pass the popcorn

You misunderstand. The point of that episode of ST:TOS was that vulcans were like salmon, the comparison is made explicitly, and have to return to a specific place for the mating ritual to occur. For Spock and presumably virtually all surviving Vulcans those locations were on Vulcan.

But that is only a side point. Can anyone deny the profound difference in tone between Voyage Home and the newest movie?

is this movie really as good as I hear? I never really got into Star Trek. Sorry, not my thing. I do like some Sci-fi, I just never got into that in particular.

Which was a change from the original ST Pon Farr. He had to get back to Vulcan to his Wife for the ritual that would make the final binding, which was being over seen by T'Pau due to the stance of his family and his importance to Star Fleet. Back to her was more important than back to his planet. Even salmon can be reoriented however and Vulcans are much more intelligent and in control than a fish. Perhaps they will build a platform/station in the area for them to use if it is that much of a biological imperative. That fire in the blood was put out just as easily with a fight as with the mating and remember T'Pring (his wife/mate) was calm, cool and collected since she had Stan and was already mating her assets off. No ceremony, no special place..just urge scratched and logic.

I really don't want to get in a long drawn out thing on this it was just a side note. Of course a decent writer could resolve the issue but that doesn't change my original point.
