MusicalBoredom -> RE: BDsM "back in the day"... (5/11/2009 9:42:40 AM)

I came to this in my head first.  I grew up in a small southern town that to this day would faint at some of the twisted things that cross my mind.  In the 70s I knew what I liked and people around me jokingly put up with my kinks.  Mainstream porn always had a few pics or drawing from time to time that included leather and such.  I remember when Rocky Horror came out and everyone went and participated.  I think that was the first out in the open acceptance that I recall.

The 80s brought Compuserve and several BDSM "forums" as they were called.  These were discussion groups much like the message boards here where people ask questions and talk about things in their real life.  In the mid 80s I found some BDSM related clubs in NY and we used to travel to see them.  I am really not the online playing type but I believe the internet has allowed a lot of people to find other people that think as they do and to gain acceptance in themselves.  It's also allowed people find groups and such.  As mentions before, the 80s also brought AIDS even though there wasn't a name for it yet and that brought a new level of safety and concern.

Sadly Pact, I DO qualify.

<snipped for brevity>

That first group became both the base camp and the gateway group for the rest of the pansexual Denver scene, I'm happy to say. And I'm very proud of what we, the core group of about six people, accomplished during those first four years when we were meeting at that welding shop. We were a group called PEP (People Exchanging Power) and they begat COLLAR, and DADS, and Uncommon Ground, and Colorado Bound, and so on and so on....  (To some extent, we also had a hand in organizing the first Thunder in the Mountains... but thats a different story.)

I have to wonder every once in a while if we happen to know some of the same people.  After reading this, I think it is probably a good possibility.
