GrumpierOldMan -> A Word about "foreign" relations.. (5/10/2009 6:33:35 AM)

I ran into a fellow that I have known off and on for about 10 years. Recently he "met" a woman from either Nigeria or Ghana (supposedly) and has apparently sent her something like $26,000.
I wonder if "she" is supposed to fly or buy a plane??
Neither the victim nor the (alleged) offender are from CM but the premise is valid here, if it is too good to be true, it likely is..  drives home the concept of NEVER EVER EVER send people you meet online money.. if they are coming to see you and you desire to pay their fare, let them borrow the fare and upon arrival you will repay the loan.
Go there and bring them back (be very very cautious about African or Asian (particularily communist or heavily Muslim countries) lest you end up a hostage or imprisoned under some of their morality laws.
Long distance relationships CAN be made to work.. but you need to really keep an eye on the ball, and not allow your gonads to rule your brain.

just my 2 cents worth..

GOM, your first post.  Welcome to cm.

Cm has warnings about precisely this.  Unfortunately, anyone dumb enough to send $26K to someone he never met prolly won't benefit from warnings...

Great advice
Now could you tell me how to open this egg?

Actually I have sent money to people I only met online, but not on CM and not solicited, people I have been talking to for years on another forum (vanilla) and when some of them hit a rough patch, it was OK to send them some money (one was a single mother and she had lost her job, so instead of just exchanging the usual xmas card via snail mail, I had some $ left from the last business trip in the US and sent her $300 so she had at least some money for Xmas presents for the Um), of course she might have been a scammer and even had a female answering the phone whenever I called and all that, but I highly doubt it. We met some years after that, when I was in her area and she actually wanted to pay me back, we decided to blow the money on a baby sitter and a girls night out instead. Same with a few online friends who hit a rough patch, if I could easily spare it (and they NEVER asked for it), not a big deal, but all of them people I was talking to for ages.

I don't think everybody online is automatically a scammer, but if anybody would request a ton of money for nothing or vague promises, I would go "Oh NO, I don't think so..."
