Hi, I am seeking advice on type of rope.
I tend to use a soft lay white nylon type rope, the issue is that when tied it never seems to hold the knot. Any advice from one who knows?
thanks
Master Bill

Just my personal experience and preference has made me believe that nylon rope is good for two things..... Clothes Lines and attaching floats to crab pots. I would however suggest you go top you tube and look up on Knotty Boy. They have 50 or so videos there discussing the rope they use, dying it, tying it etc. Well worth the hourse of entertainment. Of course they also have two books published as a moderate price.

I kind of agree with Bear on this one, though I have seen many a bondage expert using nylon rope. I think if your a novice wanting to get into restraining then your better off with hemp or at least man made rope.
Nylon does have a tendency to tighten against resistance and its very easy to cut off circulation. To an extent the same can happen with hemp but at least its easy to cut through if necessary.
Once you have got used to rope, you will get a personal preference as to what works best for you.
To me, hemp smells good, feels amazing and looks much more aesthetically pleasing.

I like very soft cotton rope, it is quite pricey (especially if you want it in black) but very soft, in case you need to cut it, it's easy to cut and it won't give somebody a rope burn quite as easily as other types of rope, especially nylon, important if you untie somebody, you can often give a really nasty burn.

Maybe not just the type of rope your using but the proper knot will keep any rope in place, mostly depending where its tied to.

Use a simple square knot, sheep shank, double eight knot etc etc.... for instructions on knots and ropes find a Boy Scout manual.
Then get your fave sub/slave and practice, practice and practice![;)]

Sailors tend to know the knots.  It's not the knot nor the rope...  have ya figured out where the issue might be?  A "bowline" and a "half hitch" are great universal knots.

I think that the rope anyone favors is really based on the person.  People seem to favor hemp quite a bit, but personally I favor bamboo rope.

Nylon has a very slippery surface, so it will slip quite a bit.  If you want to see how well a piece of rope will hold a knot, tie a basic granny knot.  The harder you pull the smaller it will get.  Watch how fast it shrinks.  The "slipperier" the rope the easier it shrinks.  Nylon is quite slippery in my opinion.

Also, what do you mean, that it doesn't hold a knot.  I assumed it was that the rope was too slippery, but that may not be accurate.

Several years ago I was practice dummie for someone who was taking one of Midori's bondage classes.  At the beginning of class she discussed the various types of rope and why some were better than others.  She loves hemp.  I got all tied up with my partner's nylon rope.  Took about 5 minutes to wiggle loose enough so that my hands were free from where he had tied them.  He tightened them up more.  Took less than 5 minutes to loosen the bonds of the already stretched nylon rope.  We both learned a valuable lesson about the pros and cons of nylon and hemp rope that day.

Well It appears that the reply from peppermint is the one that has hit it on the head. When the sub wiggles etc, she can get loose.  So fromm the replies I guess HEMP is the way to go. Now I just need to find a good local sourse for it. Thanks

I have to agree with this.  Go to the local West Marine, tell the salesperson you need 13mm sheets in whatever lengths  and color you want.  There are plenty of howto docs on whipping the ends which is a must.  West will do this for you but at a very high price.  They will also show you how and show you splices if you prefer that look.  I have used dacron and nylon with success.  The comment on "Knotty Boys" is good too.

Fadingthought -> RE: Ropes (5/13/2009 3:26:24 PM)

I always use nylon, I like the clean white look.  If your knot is slipping then you are using the wrong knot, for wrist and leg ties, use a french bowline.  It only requires 1 running end and it pulls on itself.
However as a good stop gap while you practice on new knots, simply tie a locking knot (overhand knot) in the running end of all rope, it will work as a stop gap.

DesFIP -> RE: Ropes (5/13/2009 6:26:32 PM)

If you wrap your rope enough you shouldn't need to rely on knots. You want to wrap multiple times, spreading the pressure out over a wider area, not concentrating it on one 1/4" space. Nylon will tighten and cut of fcirculation if you do it like that. But if you wrap it with even tension so it covers two or three inches it will not move and all you need to do is tuck the free end under to have it hold. At that point it doesn't matter what you use since it won't move.

FangsNfeet -> RE: Ropes (5/13/2009 9:22:27 PM)

I'm lazy. Pet and I don't get all the personal time we use to have. Leather straps, hand cuffs, and plastic wrap is great for bondage.

Fadingthought -> RE: Ropes (5/13/2009 10:53:22 PM)

All knots should tighten on themselves under tension, they should not tighten around the what is being tied up, that is just dangerous.

SailingBum -> RE: Ropes (5/13/2009 10:57:07 PM)

hell almost any hardware store has the cored rope "marine grade" that is strong beyond  belief and very easy to work with.  Yea pretty much any color you want as well.  Keep a knife ao;und for that  oh shit I really didnt mean to do that moment.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned silk ropes yet.  Most are made from japanese silk and are very comfortable, strong, smooth, soft, and stay where tied.  Yes, they can be a bit pricey depending on where you look, but, if I'm investing in material with which to practice shibari techniques, I'm more than happy to shell out a little extra.  No different than any other art form.  You can't make great food with crap ingredients, yes my prismacolor pencils cost more than crayola, but they're a LOT better too, sure I can get a $2.50 sketchpad at the local wackymart and the paper quality is shit, or I can spend $6 and get good paper,  I can spend $60 on a camera, and it'll take $60 camera pictures, or I can spend $600 on a camera and get more than 10x better quality.   Now, I'm not saying that you're going to spend $600 on the rope... unless you REALLY like tieing everything you see up.  Just saying, sometimes it's worth shelling out the extra if you can.

EDIT:  Du-hur! *headdesk*  Another great rope to use is the military rope, the black and green one...  Just hit any surplus store.  Stuff is dirt cheap and works wonders. :)

FR

I was just reviewing the Knotty Boys You Tube video on "How to dye rope". Again an excellent video. Now the rope they used here and appear to use for their teaching demonstration videos on You Tube is simply 7/16th inch Solid Braid Nylon. This is close to my preference but I use from 10mm to 14mm rope supplied by my local boating store for anchor and other uses as well as general camping. Suspension wise (which I am experimenting in) I go the whole hog and use repelling or climbing rope which here is expensive. However being 137 kgs (approx 385lbs) I need rope will take the weight. One of the reasons I recommend using the Knotty Boys instructional videos is because even an idiot can learn some of the more difficult knots and the methodology of construction. Just my thoughts others will go as they see fit.
