Termyn8or -> Better served cold ? (5/13/2009 8:39:03 PM)

HAHA ! I bet you thought this was going to be about revenge, didn't you ? It's about food.

Now mind you I try to eat better than I used to, I fail but I do watch carbs, but you need some carbs.

Pizza. I eat very little pizza, but when I do it is not the $5 kind. Fresh, a triple pepperoni is suberb when it's hot and fresh. TIPS do make a difference ! However as it cools it loses it's whatever* and it does not reheat well. Those I get from one place, a deluxe I can get better. Now from certain places it is really good cold. I used to have it with coffee. I liked it but quit coffee a couple years ago.

Mashed potatoes. Usually to me the spuds are just as good cold. Just had some with some leftover stuffed peppers, and I almost think even that was better cold.

Macaroni and cheese used to be good cold if it was made just right. I haven't had any of that in a looooong time, but I'm not saying I never will either.

Many sub sandwiches, even though some like them hot, which is really only warmed, I think some are better if they are cold and actually come straight out of the fridge.

Any other things ?

Comment : I read somewhere that our sense of wanting warm food and cold beverages for the most part was learned. Although plenty of obvious exceptions exist, like ice cream you wouldn't want warm, things like that, more natural things. I like apples better cold for example. Salads for me must be cold. But still I don't think that certain of these prefences are learned. Perhaps warm meat was an indication that it was a fresh kill back before things were cooked. What say you ?

*phonetically what I meant is jun ey sey qua. I know what it means but couldn't spell it right now for the life of me.

I am a Right outta the Can Kinda Guy.

I LOVE the following food from a Can .... and yes Room Temp.

Soup (Chicken Noodle and Chowders Best)
Pasta (Ravioli from the Can and Spagetti)
Veggies (I perfer most of my veggies from cans like Green Beans and Peas) Corn MUST be hot though.

I love Most Thanksgivings Day Foods Cold

Stuffing
Beets
Deviled eggs
Turkey
Mashed Potatoes (I add a little extra Milk and STIR like crazy)

I LOVE my Pizza Cold, The trick to good cold pizza is the sauce if there is more sauce on the pizza it tastes better cold

Pot Pies that have been cooked then cooled and refrigeated are wonderful

I also Refrigerate all my candy. I rarely Eat Cany but when I do I put my Chocolate in the Fridge and Hard Candy in the freezer.

I actually just perfer cold food.

EXCEPT BBQ COLD BBQ IS EVIL..... That and when cold you realize how much fat is actually in it and it makes you wanna puke.

I put cheez-its in the freezer. They're crunchier and (I swear) taste better cold. Back in my Dorito eatin' days, I'd put them in the freezer, too. Talk about crunch. Then I realized Doritos have MSG in them, and they were off the list permanently. It's just as well; those things were like crack in a chip.

I have to have fruit cold.  I hate room temperature fruit.  No fruit bowl in my home, it's all in the fridge.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Better served cold ? (5/13/2009 9:49:35 PM)

Fried Chicken is wonderful cold straight out of the fridge with some hot sauce. Buffalo wings are great cold too. Pork chops, either grilled or fried. A lot of Chinese food is great cold; cold egg rolls are wonderful. Meatballs, bacon, lots of different sausages, and tamales are all great cold. I'll eat most Italian tomato based pasta dishes cold, but I am not a fan of cold pizza. Cold fried fish of any kind is great; I love cold fried catfish.

A lot of things I won't eat cold. I can't stand cold potatoes of any stripe. I don't even save leftover french fries; they never are the same after they have cooled down. I won't eat cold soups or stews. I don't think most Mexican hot-dishes do well when they've been chilled. I don't like cold eggs in any form; it's probably a major reason I can't stand deviled eggs or even plain hardboiled eggs.

MrRodgers -> RE: Better served cold ? (5/13/2009 9:53:44 PM)

Food was served hot because it was cooked and mainly for health reasons. I have heard in such a way as to believe that refrigerating fresh fruits and vegetables does slow the ripening process but takes taste out of them.

NuevaVida -> RE: Better served cold ? (5/13/2009 9:58:59 PM)

Mr. Rodgers, unfortunately you are right.  I keep them out until they're perfectly ripe and then into the fridge they go until cold, sweet, and perfect. [:)]

LafayetteLady -> RE: Better served cold ? (5/13/2009 10:08:50 PM)

I've never been a fan eating foods that are typically served hot, cold.  Hate cold pizza, always have.  Cold pasta and tomato sauce makes me gag.  Most fruits I prefer cold, especially citrus fruits, watermelon and FROZEN grapes.  Guess I'm just traditional.  If it is meant to be hot, I want it hot.  Meant to be cold, want it cold.  Except for fried chicken.  I love fried chicken cold with salt.  Like it better than when it's hot.  Took me 2 years to make great fried chicken, but now that I've got it down, I love making a big batch and keeping it in the fridge to snack on.  Of course, the fact that I have a son who is a 15 year old bottomless pit means I have to hide some so I get to eat it, but that's whole other issue.

heartcream -> RE: Better served cold ? (5/14/2009 12:45:10 AM)

Personally I am not a huge fan of cold things. I like my popcorn hot and my cola cold. I grew up on Coke/Pepsi, I used to love the way it exploded in my nose first thing in the morning. It has so much crap in it I dont buy it anymore but I indulge in BlueSky Cola from New Mexico. A big party for me is organic popcorn that I pop in the air popper and then hear up butter and onion powder a few things like that depending on my mood and plenty of Himalayan Crystal salt. Down it with a cold healthier style soda. I love salty junk food and mostly get the healthier versions when I do. Except like my birthday where I will splurge and get a bag of Dorito's, mmmmmmm.

I like my food hot but not super hot. I like to heat up something and then add fresh arugula, grated carrots, diced fresh celery, tomato. I am not heating them with the food so when the hot food hits it, it all adjusts to a good temperature.

I like stove top cooking, do not like or use or want to use a microwave. I cook quite a bit so I eat it when it is ready and then augment it and eat it again changing it up a bit the next day. I dont mind if my food cools down, I might get busy and then eat it later, as long as I feel it is safe to eat it, I dont mind my dinner cooled down as long as it was hot enough to start with. My sister likes her food so hot, way to much heat for me. I do love spicy hot though, oh yeah, I love the scotch bonnets!

I dont love much food cold. I like room temperature fruit. Ice cream can rock and frozen homemade cookies dipped in hot tea or coffee is yum.

I don't really like cold food.
Tomatoes have to be room temp or better yet....sun warmed.
Salad greens too.
Pickles have to be room temp.
The only thing that asolutely, positively has to be ice cold is....BEER

Absolutely. Same goes for bagels.

Termyn8or -> RE: Better served cold ? (5/14/2009 9:12:48 PM)

OK then what do tou consider a proper pizza ? I consider it with a good amount of pepperoni and is a bit spicy, just a hair heavy on the basil in the sauce, and of course it does not need salt.

I make a decent deluxe but I am not an expert at the dough. Best thing for that is Dad's dough machine. Well bread machine but it can be set to make dough. If interested I can describe the particular process I use, and people do like it alot, but you simply can't taste it over the internet.

But if y'all are goin' to put down the pizza down yere, what is your idea of a good pizza ?

All I know is this, I could not find a good pizza in Florida or South Carolina, although I only looked much in Florida. I have yet to find a good pizza on the east side of Cleveland since DiCarlo's closed (but that was a different kind of pizza)

Basically, if you are going to assert that pizza west of Jersey is,,,, well not, please describe what you think is a good pizza.

Allthis talk of cold food makes me think of Red Dwarf and "Gispatcho Soup Day"
