missturbation -> The most annoying word in the world!! (5/14/2009 5:32:02 AM)

Can't

This word bugs the hell out of me, i mean ffs it really has no meaning, there is no such thing (in my opinion) as can't. When we say we can't do something we really mean we won't for various reasons.

For example i could say i can't kneel for longer than an hour because of a bad ankle. What i really mean is i won't kneel for longer than an hour because it would do damage to my ankle. I could do it if i wanted to but i choose not to.

I know i'm being the word police but it really irritates me. Any words that irritate you?

Oh and before anyone says it i do use the word can't, but it bugs me when i do. I want it out of the english language, out of the dictionary NOW [:D] lol.

Come on now, there are plenty of "can't"s as opposed to won'ts.
I can't fly (without a plane, that is).
I can't eat shellfish without having an allergic reaction.
I can't speak farsi.
I can't hold my own on an intellectual level with Hawking.
Can I go on?  Yes, but i won't.

Some of those i'd agree with. Its when people use it in the context of 'i can't eat shellfish'. Yes you can allergic reaction or not. What you actually mean is either what you said above or 'i won't eat shellfish because i get an allergic reaction.'
Perhaps i should have been a little clearer, i hate it when the word is used incorrectly !

Fitznicely -> RE: The most annoying word in the world!! (5/14/2009 6:42:40 AM)

I have a list:

- Innit (shortened form of "isn't it") when used at the end of a sentence and not as a question (example - "I'm going to the store, innit")
- Nilla - Please, saving ONE syllable?
- NO!
- "I'm sorry sir, we can't do that" - When said by a company who purports to provide customer service

I could go on...

I kinda like "can't"...especially as in "I can't take anymore". God I love that sentence....

Hmmm. . . I always took that to be a reference to "Nilla" as in "Nilla Wafers."

MoGa -> RE: The most annoying word in the world!! (5/14/2009 8:25:25 AM)

I'm sorry.

I know this is two words, but if the behavior continues, then the apology is meaningless. It is just one more apology overflowing with a glass of apologies to me.

I agree with Missturbation on the "Can't" word. I always say "You can't, or you won't" whenever I hear someone say that they can't do something. Most of the time, it is because they won't do it, not because they can't do it.

I had no idea such a thing existed! I doubt us Brits would get the reference - tho I can cope with being proved wrong.

Still drives me up the wall tho.

I used to hate the words "pussy" and "cunt", but I've become pretty desensitized after hanging out in here the past few years [8|]

BKSir -> RE: The most annoying word in the world!! (5/14/2009 3:07:48 PM)

Not so much words that annoy me, but their uses and errors.
Their/There/They're
Here/Hear
Your/You're
And for the love of god people "B", "C", "U", "R", "O", "N", "2", "4"... those are NOT words!  Those are just lazy.
And Nucyuhlear.  How does one even possibly get to pronounce that from "Nuclear"?  That's bothered me ever since I was a wee kitten.
I do give the pet a hard time about his "pop" as well.  But it doesn't annoy me.  I say soda, he says pop, a friend from the UK calls them fizzy drinks, another friend from the northeast calls them all colas.  It's just fun to tease him about 'pop'. ;)
