In lieu of the insidious political threads which end up with some sort of endless argument, I thought maybe we could post and solve brain teasers.

Okay then:

Two men, starting at the same point, walk in opposite directions for 4 meters, turn left and walk another 3 meters. What is the distance between them?

I would say 10 meters

The adjacent and opposite sides are 3m and 4m. Three squared is nine, and four squared is sixteen. 9+16=25. The square root of twenty-five is five, so the hypotenuse would be 5m. (5m + 5m = 10m)

What time is it when the number of minutes since midnight is nine times the number of minutes
before noon?

Any old bricklayer can tell you that. The old 3,4,5 rule is how you square a building when you can't use a square (because it is too big).

Now if you want to put some real math into it, say only one of them turns left. Try doing that one mentally, even with a trig table. (again I date myself, and let's not even start about doing a square root the old way)

If only one of them turned left, and the other kept walking straight for 3 meters, they would
be approximately 11.4 meters away from each other. Really depends on how precise you
want to get. *shrugs*
