In the same way, by referring to my own penis as a dick, todger, willy or German Soldier, I'm actually indicating that I'm scared of it.

Why?  Are you afraid it's going to rise up and attack you in the middle of the night?

And to make matters worse, he won't even be able to reason with it because he doesn't speak German.

This thread has been quite entertaining.  Who would have expected such dissertations on the etymology of 'domme'.  It never occurred to me that it would be pronounced (dom'mie).  "Mommie" is not Momme.

Mandarin Chinese lacks declension, so I suppose this is not an issue for the greatest number of people speaking a language on the planet..

Danibelle -> RE: A (half joking) thought about the word "Domme" (5/18/2009 8:49:56 PM)

This is a very interesting question.  I've always felt that using the word domme is not all that correct.  English is not like other languages where nouns and adjectives are given masculine or feminine qualifiers.  At the same time, when using an online dating site or forum where you may be describing yourself or a prospective partner, it becomes a bit more necessary.  So there is that.  To sum up my feelings, I'm undecided.  You won't see me use the word domme (I'm far more likely to say "dominant woman"), but it doesn't bother me when others do.  What DOES irk me is when it's mispronounced.

Also, a quick side note:  I've found the term domme to apply more toward the gender of the individual regardless of the sex in which they were born.  Naming yourself a domme is a statement that you identify with the female gender AND that your gender is important to you.

Panda, I've never met a penis that could be reasoned with in any language.

I find mine to be entirely emotional and not rational at all.

You know, this is actually supposed to be one of those common neurotic phobias in some Asian countries.  It has various names in various places, but apparently some men have a morbid fear that their own penis will retract and somehow kill them.  *shakes her head*  I can't even begin to imagine how much fun a sadist could have playing head games with a masochist like that...

Lockit -> RE: A (half joking) thought about the word "Domme" (5/18/2009 9:25:44 PM)

Sounds like the basis for a great re-make:  Attack of the Killer Penises.

Did this partially stem from my use of the term "d type" on another thread perchance? ;)

FullfigRIMAAM1 -> RE: A (half joking) thought about the word "Domme" (5/18/2009 10:17:16 PM)

Having studied a little bit of french, I didn't have a single qualm with using the word Domme for female dominant, when I encountered it as a different spelling to the male Dom.    I realize now that the word was created specifically for the purpose of describing female dominants, and has no known root in french.   I'm not personally gender neutral when approaching intimate personal relationships, and don't mind at all being called a Domme, or lady who is dominant as a descriptive.

Unfortunately, ThatDamnedPanda is probably right though [:'(]

LafayetteLady -> RE: A (half joking) thought about the word "Domme" (5/18/2009 10:19:26 PM)

The "default male" thing is due to the fact that when civilized society was in it's early stages, men were considered superior.  Obviously time and stupid acts have proven that isn't always the case.  I would never have considered it would be widely mispronounced, so that's kind of surprising, and I would find that totally annoying.  In the written word, I've always just seen it as a way to state whether someone was male or female.  Like comedian/comedianne, actor/actress, hell he/she for that matter.  To me, it is just a descriptive term used to identify gender.

Some words have a great deal of power, good or bad.  God, Supreme (even if just for pizza).  Some words that have power should just cease to exist (I think most of us know which one particular word that is).  Being called "gay" is not the same as being called a "fag".  Some lesbians hate the term "dyke"  Are you a girl, a woman or a lady?  A man or a boy?  After all, many of us have no issue saying we are going out with the girls.  Likewise, a male says he is hanging out with the "boys" not the "men".

While I intend no disrespect to anyone who posted and we are all intended to our pet peeves....honestly if getting bent out of shape over whether you need to have a gender specific "title" is your biggest beef, I'd say you have a pretty good life.

You don't know the half of it.  I've had an erection during the night and woken up to find I've got a broken jaw.  The times I've had to mend the ceiling in the morning, as well.  It's a raging beast, V, I'm telling you.

This is exactly what happens when I am bored and still spacey from the previous night.  (Trust Me.  This was a better topic than some of the other things that were swirling around in My fuzzy head.)

Only a broken jaw?  tsk..tsk...
If it isn't at least a black eye, it's not even worth my time!!

I don't think I'll be spending the night with you, for some reason.  I like the apertures in my body where they are, thanks.

I don't use Domme or Domina. I'm not a "dominant", I'm a female. I'm not a female dominant because that would put "female" in the descriptive place, as in describing what kind of dominant I am, instead, I'm a female and use the word "dominant" as a descriptor. So I am a dominant female. Domme and Domina both irk me... gosh women are sure a pain in the ass, aren't we?

Did that make any sense at all?

Jewel

I think this is why I finally settled on "Dame"... it harkens back to a more genteel time, and a woman in charge of her demesne. It removes the "claim" of Madame (which, broken down, is My Dame) -- which is the term I allow along with "Mistress" for those whom I actually -keep- as servants. It also infers some measure of maturity, which I strive to present, and hope that I reflect... the thought is always in the back of my mind, even if I fall off the mark sometimes (or step off intentionally to be silly, raunchy, truck-driverish, crude... yes, I suffer from -all- of the above on occasion).

While I see the humor in the OP, I think I'm a bit twitchy about the whole idea of  "dom me"... my brain keeps juggling it between "Me Dom, You Jane!" and "Dom me, Dom me... Pleeeeeeeeeeeze!"... neither of which trips my trigger -- at least, not today.

Dame Calla
