66-Year-Old to Be Oldest British Woman to Give Birth She's a 66-year-old successful career woman about to become a first-time mom. Elizabeth Adeney, now eight months pregnant, will be one of the oldest new mothers in the world. Chatter on the Internet ranges from wonder at the miracle to harsh criticism, with one post calling Adeney's decision to have in vitro fertilization an example of "breathtaking selfishness." When she's 85 years old, her child will still be a teenager. But Adeney, who lives near Lidgate, Suffolk, in southeastern England, reportedly said that to be a mother, all that matters is how old you feel on the inside. And she claimed she is young and fit and feels like she is 39 years old. Most IVF clinics in Britain (and the United States) don't offer treatment to women older than 50, so Adeney flew to Ukraine, where there is no age limit on IVF, becoming one of the so-called

If I were to choose the factors that matter most in having/raising a child, age would not top the list. Good luck to her!

Having lost a husband and a parent, I really do pity that child since it will grow up parentless. The likelihood is that mom will be dead before the child ever reaches adulthood. I'm one of those people who finds it incredibly selfish and most likely have to deal with emotional problems from it.

I agree with "littlewonder"...my mother had me at age 38 which today is nothing but back in 1959 it was not the norm at all and she was older than all my friend's mothers. She died at the age of 73 and even though I was in my mid-30's then i thought that was way too soon...and since the average age of death now is 77 in the U.S. I think this child this 66 year old has might be an orphan early or have to take care of an elderly parent in her 20's..yikes![:(]

Hmm....After reading the article, it would appear that she is an accomplished and intelligent woman. I find it hard to believe that the age/life expectancy issue hasn't crossed her mind in all of this. For all we know, she has a support system in place, and a younger willing relative (married or otherwise) who has agreed to assume the raising of the child, should the mom pass away before the child is an adult.

Well, being accomplished and intelligent doesn't make someone more sane than someone with an average IQ and actually some would say the more intelligent someone the more problems they have in dealing with life's everyday issues and are more susceptible to being eccentric and making odd choices..especially those in the high genius range..but i don't know how smart she is.....but even though I feel she is being selfish to this child I am not one to say it should be not allowed if she is deemed mentally stable but we all have our opinions and that is what these message boards are about.

My point was that she seems to be an intelligent human being, and most intelligent human beings care about the child they're about to bring into the world. Calling her selfish while making the assumption that she hasn't planned for the child in the event of her death is an unfounded jump to judgement. But of course you are free to imagine the worst possible scenerio.

I also don't see how it's anybody's business to judge people's procreative choices. This medical decision was taken in confidence between her and her doctors. And... how often again do we see men get their morals evaluated for choosing to have children past a certain age?
