What do you rhink about the Face Transplant that has been in the news?

It kinda freaks me out and I don't no why? It just seems creepy.
I don't even think the creepiness is connected to "the transplant" perse'
but it just do happens this face part was donated by a young girl who comitted suicide, and it is wild to think that this woman chose death, yet another has now part of her looks and speaks though her lips. This idea and the photo's kind of are freaky to me.

Maybe it's late and I need to turn off CNN[&:].

I think I can understand where you are coming from - most transplants are internal, and aren't seen, whereas this one is a visible one and of course a person's face is their identity. Seeing part of someone else's face superimposed upon another does not seem natural. It's like their own identity has been merged with another. Our brains can't seem to process this yet I guess[&:]

Seems like a bad crime novel, where fingerprints are "removed" and plastic surgery attempts to give the Mob guy a "new identity".

It is spooky. But I actually was amazed and think they did a damn good job considering what I've read and the extensive damage from the mauling. In due time... I think she will be okay and have a very normal life. It was a courageous act to get up there in front of national press and take questions. My hat goes off to her.

I think it is great what they can do to help people. Like UtopianRanger I think it was brave of her to talk about it. I also admire the courage of people and their families who donate for transplants.

Well, at least it was not done for "art". I cannot remember her name, but there is an "artist" that has had mulitple plastic surgeries on her face, and filmed them, as her "art". Now that is really spooky. I would give you a link, but like I mentioned, I cannot recall her name. Perhaps someone on here knows?

Best,

More freaky to me would be this poor woman (the recipient) walking around with no nose or lips after the dog had eaten them off.

An aquaintence from HS had horrible burns (at age 19 or so) from and exploding gas leak that he was searching for (he was a fireman) He wore a mask from then on.

There are people who see with donated eyes, whose blood pumps with a donated heart, those who would be here to hug their loved ones had it not been for donations of all sorts.

Interesting to note, that a face is formed much more by bone structure than anything else, and I believe she resembles her old self much more than she does to donor. (Though I am sure there must be significant differences).

Is it freaky? Perhaps a little. And I am glad for this kind of freaky.

I loved it, I thought it was absolutely amazing.

No one can hold a candle to Michael Jackson...who evidentially even attempted to change his racial appearance. What a creepy guy.

As an aside, i had a birthmark become cancerous when i was 12. Because they grafted skin over the amputated area, they placed me in the pediatric burn ward. The MD's and RN's who work there must surely be angels amoung us; nothing i have ever heard has sounded like the pain of those burned children.

strong agreement from me on that one. MJ and those plastic surgery addicts are the creepy ones.

If it were myself or one of my loved ones who had their face mauled off by a dog, I would be indescribably grateful for the second chance at a "normal" life.

You know, forty years ago they wouldn't have been able to do much in the way of reconstructing her face. The fact that she has someone elses face is a little strange, but she has a chance at a normal life. The biggest organ our body has is skin, it is just an unusual procedure to put someone elses face on another person, but it is an organ replacement just the same. It is a true wonder that this procedure could be done.

Some of our brains I suppose.
Mine can.

Someone is living a life where people don't recoil from her in terror. Someone regained something that they lost. I don't see any problems with that. I'm all for transplants, testing, donation and scientific measures to make life happier, more pleasant - or in some cases just a bit more bearable.

Yes I agree with what you say here Ranger.
I am all for the surgery and this woman now maybe having some normalcy back to her life.
Maybe what was spooking me was thinking from the stand point of the young girl her killed herself's parents and how weird it must be to see part of their daughters face on this other woman and to see her speaking through their daughters lips.

Kind of like building a Frankenstein person from a group of friends bodies parts who died in a blast you survived, like you could look in the mirror and see Joe's bottom half of face on yours, the arms of Jack and a leg of Chester, looking at your hands and remembering how they looked on Jack and/or how Jack used them.

Well I don't know if that a great example but it would kind of freak me out as the mother of the deceased girl to see part of her daughters face still alive and functioning. I guess because it's the face the seems creepy to me because you can actually see the other person to some degree. I find it a great scientific move forward though.
