I'm currently smoking my last cigarette.  I've tried this too many times before to honestly believe it's the last one ever, but it's the last one I have.

Input from those who have quit smoking is more than welcome at this point.  I have the gum, and a large stack of little projects to try and get me through.

I'm wondering who will smack me down on the inevitable irritability first though, my wife, or Mod XI?

WarKirby -> RE: The last one (5/24/2009 1:11:00 PM)

I gave up my addiction to junk food. Probably not the same thing, but I'm sure you can do it!

thishereboi -> RE: The last one (5/24/2009 2:16:59 PM)

Good luck.

DarkSteven -> RE: The last one (5/24/2009 2:22:49 PM)

Congratulations, Rich, and good luck to you and your acquaintances getting through this.

Let your wife know if she wants to borrow a paddle from me.

I would have made the same offer to Mod XI but I doubt my paddle would be as effective as hers.

I sorta doubt it will go that way, Steve.  One of the little projects I have to focus on is clearing out a chest I know has a few whips and floggers I haven't used on her in a while.

The problem?  I want a cigarette after administering a good flogging!

Quitter!

MrRodgers -> RE: The last one (5/24/2009 3:27:45 PM)

Oh, it's easy...I've quit a thousand times. Thankfully, I didn't need 1001. Tell yourself 'there is assitively posilutely NO reason to smoke a cigarette.'

PanthersMom -> RE: The last one (5/24/2009 4:05:02 PM)

Hmmm.  Probably not a good sign that I became quite angry to discover that a reasonably priced 1/2 gallon of ice cream, was actually a 1.5 quart...

Joseff -> RE: The last one (5/24/2009 10:01:53 PM)

You can quit if you really want to. One thing I found helpful was to tell myself that if I smoke even one, I'll have to go through it all over again.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: The last one (5/24/2009 10:22:02 PM)

Congratulations! Don't worry about getting pissy; everybody knows you well enough to know that's not the real you. Nobody's going to take it personally coming from you.

One thing that I found helpful was to change my diet somewhat for the first couple of weeks, until I got over the physical aspect of the addiction. I found that acidic foods - like meat, grains, coffee, etc. - would trigger cravings for a cigarette, whereas alkaline foods - like green vegetables, potatoes, whatever - would not. Sounds screwy, but it really made things a hell of a lot easier for me once I figured that out.

Good luck. If you need to blow off some steam, go ahead and light me up. I won't mind. You probably owe me a few from the times I've gotten snippy in the political threads, anyway!

~FR~

My grandmother, mother, and father all quit smoking (years before it was fashionable!) by going cold turkey. My grandmother had smoked for more than forty years (she wasn't even 60 when she quit, to give you an idea of around when she started). The only thing she did to make it 'easier' was not go anywhere that had them for a few months. It meant quitting bowling, for her, and going to a normal store instead of the corner gas station for groceries, and only accepting non-smoking (or, in the case for the first couple of months only going to places that had ONLY non-smoking) seating at restaurants. The one time I talked to her about it she said it was easy because she knew it was the best thing she'd ever done for herself.

While you might not be able to make the same claim (I don't know how awesome you are to yourself ;)) it's a nice thought to have! She had been smoking about a half a pack a day at the time of quitting, after cutting down (her sister died of lung cancer from, you guessed it, smoking) from a pack and a half just a couple of months earlier.

Mom quit cold-turkey because she didn't want to smoke while pregnant, so did it before her wedding. Dad quit smoking cigs when he got married to mom to not tempt her, and quit pipes (which I guess isn't as addictive? I dunno) after he left the navy.

Try not to break anything at the grocery store.  And many people recommend substituting the cravings with exercise and/or sex.  You can also contact me to vent and rage at the world.  [;)]

Thanks, Ven.  I'm not sure how this is going to turn out.  I'm going through the nicotine gum which helps a little.  I've also been using a nicotine inhaler for the worst moments (that may be defeating the whole purpose, but I'm not lighting cigarettes, and even that only takes the edge off, so maybe there is still some benefit).

How it goes at work tomorrow is another matter entirely.

...just leave your firearms at home......[:D]

(sorry, inveterate smoker here and i can't help teasing those who fall from the faith)

PyrotheClown -> RE: The last one (5/25/2009 10:52:07 PM)

just start smoking crack, you'll forget about the cigarettes in no time...

YoursMistress -> RE: The last one (5/25/2009 10:59:56 PM)

I quit for one week (1 pack per day Kools) about 20 years ago.  During a night out in Buffalo, New York (bars open till 4 am) I bought and smoked a whole pack in about 2.5 hours.  The next day I felt so awful I quit for good.

During a Tony Robbins seminar, he related his early experiences as a motivator where he forced a smoker to chain smoker until he got sick of it.

Good luck to you!  I'm pulling for ya!

yours

pahunkboy -> RE: The last one (5/26/2009 12:45:26 AM)

that is good news!   I am glad.

TheHeretic -> RE: The last one (5/26/2009 6:32:26 PM)

That was an excellent suggestion about leaving the gun at home today, Phil.  Thanks!  [:D]

The folks at work were very supportive, and took a couple of calls where they could tell I was about to drop my normally outstanding level of courtesy, and let the assholes know what I thought.

55 hours is longer than I have ever made it.
