????You're about to.... "Not only fasting from physical stimulations, but mental as well. Trying to..go a 40 day fast on not only water, but no mental stimulations of the recreational type, no internet, news, media, television, radio, sports, and most of all, not turning to the left or right, or letting the thought of a woman influence a single action."

Heck. Piece of cake. The not turning left or right though, now there's a challenge! I read about that in my drivers safety course book the other day. By turning right three times, youre really making a left turn. So...if the not turning left or right doesnt pan out, keep that one in mind.

Personally? A bigger challenge might be to discipline yourself into starving to death, then writing us from the other side to tell us your experience. Anybody else here think the poster should aim for that?? I think we're all game, although I know I shouldnt speak for the rest of the gang so soon into this thread. It might get to the point where WE feel like killing ourselves if we read too much more from you.

Did someone forget to read what he posted over in the Politics and Religion  " Love Is Patient " poem this morning. True colors always shine through.
I have learned much in this thread, the highs and lows of what fasting really does to a person. LOADS of fun doesn't even begin to cover it.
Thanks for sharing.

I've known Alot of people who have spent much time and energy on fasting in the desert and having"visions quests","personal journeys", "cleansing rituals",ect.ect. and while I never question the personal profoundness these people had felt during their experiences, I've never found that these people were any more prophetic or insightful (or healthier)then your average street bum..I've actually noticed that alot of them are very self absorbed, and while they have great resolve in their beliefs, amazing amount of drive, ect. which I have found to admire, most of them are just skinny pricks, and in the end, I believe that actually achieving something tangible(like devoting your life to feeding the poor) is a better use of time and energy, as well as a more fulfilling (richer) personal journey, not to mention it greatly saps your energy, and life is short, so why on earth would you want to slow your life down like that.....That's just my take on it.

Well perhaps. But the original poster on this thread was a guy. Or so i thought so. Maybe boobs are what he needs. Or maybe he is one already. So another one wont make any difference. He seems very well put together already. Wouldnt want to mess with the mix now would we?

Hmmmm, no anger there eh? LMAO

A fast such as OP describes should bring out a gentle, contemplative side.  When OP quits fasting and starts eating meat, he or she will be LOADS of fun.

Steven...you lil shit....i can't stop laughing at this

Discipline to me isn't some sort of achievement gained through fasting but an integral part of living and is something which is exercised rather than bragged about.

Doesn't externally-competitive spiritual or self-growth practice sorta miss the point?

My experience with people who do not eat enough and are always underfed and hungry is that they get mean and nasty. Sound familiar op? Go have a decent meal and start worrying about how you treat others instead of how great you are(n't).

I wouldn't necessarily call forcing yourself to do something that is readily unhealthy and dangerous for an extended period of time "discipline". There is a word for it, but that ain't it. I honestly don't understand why people fast. It's like driving with your feet: sure you can do it, but that doesn't make it a good idea.

In the Bible, the Monks/Priests who fasted and made a huge deal about it, telling everyone how much they suffered, what great pains they went through for the fast, how they thought they fasted better than everyone else, therefore they where better than everyone else; where in fact looked down upon by jesus.

It was those who fasted and did it for their own personal reasons and kept it to themselves who found grace in Jesus.

IIRC, that was more about praying than fasting. Jesus told people who make a public show of righteousness to go *back in the closet* and mend their relationships with God, since they're doing it to impress other people instead of out of faith. Same basic idea, though.

Alphascendant, it sounds like your blood sugar is getting low, and it's making you cranky!

In 1988 I was homeless, jobless, and in the space of about 3 months went from 230 lbs to about 170. I see nothing healthy or honorable in that, and would never do anything like that intentionally.

This thread was initiated with hopes of possibly learning from the experiences of others who have fasted for extended lengths of time. "Unhealthy"? It appears that not many bothered to go to the link that was provided in the original post. "Life is short, why slow it down?" Our material life is relatively short compared to other forms of life, and that is exactly the reason to slow it down. "Bragging," just stating facts. "Anger," if it walks, talks, and looks like a duck..... How many people here have punched or slapped a face because of their own uncontrollable rage? Or even worse, who has done so to a child? "Hypocrite,"? There isn't one person alive who hasn't indulged in some form of unhealthy behavior, so anybody who points a finger at another in a belittling, berating, or negative manner is putting their own hypocrisy on display, permanently entrenched in the annals of internet history.
Buddha was fat,"? also inspiring of idol worship, spiritualism versus materialism, one can not be loyal to both.

To the gentleman that was homeless, it was the choices that you made  that inevitably led to your homelessness. As unfortunate as your situation was, surely you must have learned something from that which has conditioned you to conduct your life in a more positive manner, so why refer to it in a negative manner?  At this moment, I am sitting at a campsite in northern Idaho, overlooking a beautiful lake. My material "home" is about 3,000 miles away. Other than being greeted with the smiles and laughter of cherished loved ones, there is really not much difference between here and my "home." This place may not be my material home, but it is my spiritual home.

"The other side of CM,"? Sounds kind of bi-polar, disassociative identity disorderly, or even schizophrenic to me... There is no other side. This is life.
