Ok... either they deliberately found people who really Are on the verge of overwhelming ignorance for both of those videos, or I'm a lot better educated about the rest of the world than I thought I was.....

GreedyTop -> RE: funny.... but SERIOUSLY sad (5/27/2009 8:58:59 AM)

I think it's the latter, Rhi

agreed

it's soooo sad though.
but hell when ppl approach you out of nowhere with these kind of questions you do get confused even with easy questions like these....
but..it's sad and it is even more sad when a whole nation is considered 'stupid' by the rest of the world...or yanno what I mean.

hlen5 -> RE: funny.... but SERIOUSLY sad (5/27/2009 11:22:12 AM)

I couldn't take any more about three minutes into the first clip. You KNOW they have to be editing out the correct answers.

I wonder how much is uneasiness about feeling like you're put on the spot.

I've always thought it would be kind of fun to make the most outrageously bad answers you could think of. You'd be sure to be in the clip then. The downside would be everyone would think you shouldn't be let out of the house unescorted.

On the other hand, you could end up as the President of the United States... well, they never did actually let George W. Bush out of the house unescorted.  I believe we might have found a parallel.

Well, the average IQ is 100 and most people are smart enough to avoid being interviewed by some arrogant jerk with a camera.  Why is it so surprising that they got a bunch of folks who either didn't know the answer to some admittedly pretty easy questions- or got flustered when a camera and a microphone gets shoved in their face.  I must admit, I have a sneaking desire to turn the tables on both the interviewer and cameraman and say- hey wiseguy- you're so smart-
1)  what's the speed of light?
2) How about when Chamberlain declared Peace in our time- which country had just been sacrificed?
3) Or maybe something that some of the folks on the camera might have got like "who won the '69 World Series?"

Somehow, democracy does seem to work, even if TV interviewers would prefer fascism....

1969 World Series: NY Mets
1969  SuperBowl III NY Jets

And they wonder why I love '69...

Umm, actually Chamberlain had just thrown Czechoslavakia under the bus in '38 by signing the Munich pact.  When Hitler invaded Poland in '39, that's when Britain and France declared war- and proved to be relatively toothless.

...but you're missing the point Sam.....England, world cup, 1966......[:D]

Fitznicely -> RE: funny.... but SERIOUSLY sad (5/28/2009 8:40:46 AM)

*cough* world series that only one continent plays *cough*.

VeryNastyDom -> RE: funny.... but SERIOUSLY sad (5/28/2009 9:36:53 AM)

Utah isn't a country?

I think they stole this idea from a Canadian comedy show that had a segment "Talking with Americans" where the interviewer would ask questions about hot topics, like whether the US should agree to allow more deep sea fishing off in the coastal water of Saskatchewan.

Having been to Utah, I think it sorta is its own country- certainly has a different tax system than the rest of the states.

"...but you're missing the point Sam.....England, world cup, 1966......[:D]"

OK, I'll admit I'm lost- and I don't understand the connection here between Poland, Czechoslavakia, and WWII.

..back to culture again. In the Uk, noting that England won the World Cup in 1966 trumps all other considerations.....
"You ran into my car!"
"Ah, but England won the World Cup in 1966"
"Yeah, they did didn't they!"

samboct -> RE: funny.... but SERIOUSLY sad (5/28/2009 11:35:19 AM)

Ah, thank you for the explanation.  Live and learn- or you don't live long.

purepleasure -> RE: funny.... but SERIOUSLY sad (5/28/2009 12:08:53 PM)

I've just realized that I'm not as smart as I thought I was.  Or, forgot ALOT of what I should know.
